Electronic Theatre offers a decisive perspective of the Current-Generation console "war", and decides the victor based on market trends and social awareness.

Selecting a "winner" for each console generation is somewhat of a nonsensical engagement. Before even beginning to assess the merits of your sources of sales figures, release dates, review scores and other such relevant texts, you have to consider exactly what qualities a "winner" would possess. Would it be the largest quantity of widely renowned videogame releases of a high quality? Or that which had increased its library from the previous-generation to the greatest extent? Perhaps the defining merit would be the console manufacturer who had managed to increase their market share by the greatest margin? Or that which pushed the industry into new territory? Or maybe, it's simply the console that sold the most units?

Anyone who says all 3 consoles are equally good is daft. You take 3 products from any product group and you will not get 3 products that are equally good.

        Video gaming isn't any different.

Absolutely no ones said all three are equally good. Of course each has their own ups and downs. What I'm saying is that if you enjoy the games and you have a good time that's all that matters, all this console versus console bullshit is ridiculous and propagates fanboys. Back in the SNES/Sega days you never had the BS fanboy console comparison that you see now with 360/PS3.

It's sad that some people treat the consoles as if they're up for some prestigous award every generation. Just let the systems run their course and play the awesome games that each system has. Does that sound hard at all?

To be honest, why does there have to be a console war to begin with. That's like saying who is the best person in a family or company where each person does their own job. Each one brings its own to the table, take any one out and you lose a good part. Keep them all in and bam you have excellence!

I hate this whole console war. All it really is to me is a bunch of fanboys arguing with deaf ears because others won't listen due to their own fanboyism.

The Wii has some fun games, especially for family/friend get-togethers. Plus it adds something of its own with the excessive use of motion to play.

The PS3 is a hardware behemoth with advanced technology that hasn't yet been fully used, and has some great action/adventure games for middle-ground gamers.

The 360 has a great fanbase for online (can nearly always find people online) and great online features, and games that in my oppinion gear more towards hardcore shooter fans.

Why does everyone just have to always talk about a console war? It's the dumbest *bleep*ing myth on Earth. NO ONE gives a shit. Even Nintendo already stated that they're not taking part in it.

Olol at everyone trying to seem mature by dismissing the debate of which console is the best. Real maturity would be to have a proper debate.

You know what, I think the 360 is best.
    • 1
      HisServant77 Mar 18, 09
OR . . . real maturity is realizing that each one carries it's own to the table, and liking all of them and not being a fanboy and feeling like you need to scream like a schoolgirl over a particular console, and a jealous girlfriend defending a boyfriend against a ex-girlfriend you feel is coming after "your man."

I never said each one didn't have it's advantages, I own all 3 and know of their pros and cons.

Like I said, I think the 360 is best.
        • 2
          Koloth Mar 19, 09
There is no proper debate. Best is purely opinion. I own all three as well I prefer the PS3. But I also realize it isn't "the best" it is just my preference. And you can't debate preference and opinion. Even trying to do so is saying that my opinion and preference is better than yours. Which is just inviting a flame war and fanboy wank.

On top of that you can't really debate who is going to win. The Wii has a clear lead at this point and no amount of wishing is going to change that anytime soon. The 360 is solidly in second place. And the PS3 is doing well in third but short of the 360 lagging in sales again this year it is doubtful it will close the gap. At this point I think the consoles have taken the positions they are going to stay in until they are replaced next gen. It would take a drastic change in buying trends to change things.

On the other hand we won't have a run away winner this gen either. The PS3 and 360 are alreayd doing better than the Xbox and GC were doing last gen. And The Wii while having a good lead isn't exactly running away with it unchallenged. So in the end the numbers will be better than last gen but I think position is pretty much decided.

VERY well said, Koloth. I couldn't say it better than that, that's for sure

          Hunskelper Mar 19, 09
The argument that there is no best console is invalid. If we applied that logic to all comparisons then we would be unable to decide anything.

Also, there's a little report button next to every comment so if a fanboy did come along and ruin our debate we can get themdealt with quickly and efficiently.

          Right, so let's debate -- I'll start :

I think the 360 is best because it has the highest number of top quality exclusives over the widest range of genre's (for me top quality is anything 8.5/10 or higher).

          Now you go.
        • 0
          Big A2 Mar 19, 09
          Oh, this looks fun.

So by 8.5/10 do you mean what you would rate the game or what all those website that control us mindless gamers rated it?
        • 0
          HisServant77 Mar 19, 09
The problem is . . . reread what Koloth had said. You might understand that it's not that there's no "best" console. Rather "best" is relative to one's oppinion. Therefore a debate would be nothing but saying "I think this is best and here is why" end of your turn. Then that's all you get because you shared your oppinion. A debate is not for made for expression oppinions. You would then be saying, "My oppinion is better than yours." Then the next one says "No, MY oppinion is better than yours" Back and forth it would go, with no point in site.

It's fine to express which console you like the best, but . . . that's far from a debate. And again, it's an oppinion.

          Koloth Mar 19, 09
I assure you Hunskelper that the 8.5/10 ratingare pretty close to one to one right now.

But I'm not going to argue an opinion. I played Gears it was alright. I played Dead Rising it was entertaining. I played Lost Odyssey I got bored before the end but it was still pretty good. I bought the 360 to play NG2 and amazingly never finished it.

On the other hand I personally found Uncharted more entertaining than any of those. I played it through at least 4 times. I spent way more time on MGS4 than Gears. I played the Gears campaign once I played MGS4 at least 5 or 6 times. And I played Ratchet and Clank multiple times. For me, and me alone the PS3 is better. I play it more and I find the games more appealing over all. And this isn't something you can prove me wrong on. It is purely my personal opinion. I enjoy the 360 when I play it, but given the choice I would play the PS3 first. And usually do.

On top of that I usually buy multiplatform title for the PS3 just because I prefer it. Mainly because I liek the controller better. Again personal preference doesn't make the PS3 better, just better for me.

The idea that they are all as good as each other is laughable. If I were to say every single MP3 player was as good as each other then people would dismiss my opinion because it's obviously nonsense - why are video game consoles any different? Answer: they're not. This desperation not to seem like fanboys or offend anyone is really getting on my tits.

          As for quality exclusives I'll list what I think are quality games for PS3 and 360;

360: Call of Duty 2, Condemned, Perfect Dark Zero, Prey, Saints Row, Gears 1 and 2, Crackdown, Halo 3, Mass Effect, Fable II and Left 4 Dead. Total = 12.

PS3: Resistance, Ratchet and Clank 5, Uncharted, MGS4, LBP and Killzone 2. Total = 6.

These list don't include JRPG's, racing or fighting games because I don't like these genre's but for every Gran Turismo there's a Forza/PGR.
        • 2
          HisServant77 Mar 20, 09
That MP3 argument doesn't hold water in this one though. Two different scenerios. All mp3 players do what? Play music. Some play videos. So the only thing you really can compare concerning MP3 players is how they are made and how good their hardware is. Other than that, then yes you are talking oppinion again in regard to style of the MP3 player and features and price. Then it sounds like your the kid who goes up to people with another MP3 player and constantly says "Mine is better than yours!" You know how I've learned to respond to those people? A simple "Yeah, sure, if you say so." And walk away.

So really this whole thing is about which console HARDWARE is best? Well okay then. THAT we can discuss.

However, hardware alone does not a console make. Therefore hardware does not determine which console is best. It has to be a combination of hardware and software. Then again, some people may see the huge amount of features of one console and say "Wow!" Whereas those who have no interest in those features, will say "Eh, no biggie."

What use is a feature-rich console that has games you don't enjoy playing? Bragging rights? Yeah you have yourself one expensive trophy to put on the shelf and never use.

What use is a console that has several AAA, highly rated (by reviewers biased by personal taste) games, yet you don't enjoy those games? Yay! You have yourself another trophy to set on the shelf and not use!

So you see, Hun . . . skelper ( ) If you want to compare the console hardware that's one thing. If you want to compare console features that's another thing. But you can't compare consoles in general and say which is best overall, simply due to the fact that the very thing that MAKES a console "best" is the personal taste of the one who plays it. The most that can be said is "I LIKE this one best" and another says "I LIKE this one best" . . . there is no debate. There is no winner. Just personal expression of which console is personally liked most.

We're not arguing about MP3 players where hardware is drastically dissimilar. If we were the PS3 would clearly be the winner since it has the superior hardware. After all doesn't matter if you have a Zune, Ipod, something by Creative Labs the music is all the same.

          quote
          As for quality exclusives I'll list what I think are quality games for PS3 and 360;
Exactly, what you think are quality. I however have no interest at all in CoD, Halo, L4D, PDZ, or Condemned. It is all opinion. It has nothing at all to do with not offending others. It has to do with the realization that better and best is a matter of opinion.

I think Root beer is better than Dr. Pepper and Dr. Pepper is better than Coke. In fact I hate Coca Cola and I hate Pepsi even more than that. But they both sell millions of cans a day. Does that make my opinion wrong? No, it just makes it my opinion.

I'm running my PS3 right now to watch a movie. And later I might play some Rockband or a PSN game. After than maybe a blu-ray. But in all likelyhood I won't even turn on my 360 today.I didn't turn it on yesterday or the day befor and probably won't tomorrow either. But my PS3 is on every day for one reason or another. Although I do have Duke Nukem to play on 360 which I might just do later. Who knows.

TBH Koloth, anything we expect now can be considered pure speculation. We don't know if a PS3 price cut is coming or not, and what effect it'd have if there was. We don't know if this year's titles will boost sales or not.

Point is, we don't know. Speculation is OK, but predicting the final outcome this early is just a needle in a haystack.

Exactly what I say also. I do say the things I think will happen, but it's only guessing. Such as I don't think a price cut will happen, and the PS3 will probably take a couple more years before pulling ahead in popularity.

I just don't expect much to change really. I think things at this point are the way they are and the way they will stay. The PS3 will have its grabs at dominance and the 360 will have its grabs. Meanwhile the Wii will carry on doing whatever it does.
