Electronic Theatre hosts a special report on the public perception on the PlayStation brand and, in particular, the PLAYSTATION3, from across the ocean.

While the Xbox360 and Wii have a considerably lower price and larger install base than the PLAYSTATION3, the console isn’t all that far behind the competition. However, since 2006 Sony has been taken a good pummeling by the media (especially in North America) because of the high-price and gaudy promotional campaign for the third-generation PlayStation console. It’s still not uncommon for a lot of journalists and gamers alike to rant on Sony, claiming that their console is “dying” or “failing” because of its third-place predicament.

He brings to light just about every qualm I've had with this generation's console war. He's right: most North Americans think that only idiots and fools buy the PS3, and that the 360 is like the second coming of Jesus.

But don't bring up the price issue. Just don't. You MUST be a cheap tightwad to not be able to shell out $399 for what seems to me like the ultimate media package.

I agree with you there too, Red. The whole Price thing is really old and dead by now.

You'd be surprised. There are hundreds of people who won't even consider the PS3 until it drops its price down by at least $100. Which is frankly idiotic, considering what a great deal it is.

True, but some people dont want to spend $399 for a video gane console, if they don't play video games. Most people just get it for the Blu-Ray sometimes. Some people get it for gaming, and don't want the extra stuff, just a simple gaming console. If that's what they want, the 360 is much cheaper, and pretty much gets to the point: gaming. Plus the 360 can do some things the PS3 cant. Its vice versa also, but for about $200 more it shouldnt be like that. Simple things like listening to music while gaming for example.

The 360 and PS3 are about exactly the same in terms of capability; you're thinking of their online services, in which case they are still roughly the same.

However, you are right about wanting just a core gaming console. The Arcade is perfect for those who don't want all those fancy doodads. However, for those wanting more than that, the PS3 and 360 are about the same in terms of what they offer and the point it is priced at.

I don't even understand why the price was ever an issue in the first place. Take the 360's $199 price tag, add on the overpriced $100 wireless adaptor, plus $50+ per year for Xbox Live and the final price of the 360 is $299 + $~50 per year. The PS3 is $399, it's already wireless and online is free; after two years the Xbox is more expensive.

Your going on with the assumption that everyone wants to play online.
Some people don't care about it, all they want is a box to play Madden and Guitar Hero on, so at $199 the arcade is the right choice for those people.
And if you even need wireless there are ways of getting it much cheaper $100, and I see 13 month live gold cards selling for $30-$39 all the time. Both wireless and Live are things you can get later if you even want them, instead of paying for it all upfront, but you've probably heard all this before and just don't care.
