What do Sony and Apple have in common? Well among others, they happen to share the same common enemy in Microsoft. Topher Cantler from destructoid.com looks at why them teaming together could be a good thing for the both of them and why Sony feels reluctant to do so. DAMN YOU WALKMAN!

Imagine, just for a moment, what might happen if Sony and Apple sat down over brunch together to discuss their common enemy. All sorts of wild ideas come to mind; visions of incredible devices that could change the electronic entertainment industry forever. It's already been rumored that the next generation of PSP will boast a touch screen, and that Sony would like nothing more than to include some sort of cell functionality in order to take down the iPhone. Why?

What if they were the same device? I know it sounds absurd, but humor me. What if the new PSP and the next iPhone were the same product? Where does that leave Microsoft, who doesn't even have a handheld? Or a phone? Wouldn't iPhone gaming, which has already done a remarkable job on its own, benefit even further from involvement by the PlayStation brand? Wouldn't the PSP, which has wasted so much time trying to be a media player, be better off with a little help from the people who make the most successful one out there?

Sony makes PCs that run on Windows.

Even so, they're by no means sure to take down Microsoft by teaming up.

Additionally, insane amounts of people use Windows, they count on updates.

You could go on for awhile, PSP/Iphone. Why not have a PC/360/PS3/Wii/Car. Because it'd be really expensive, and not many people are interested in having more than one thing. Combining the Iphone and PSP does not reduce the amount of gadgets for many people, it simply adds a whole lot of functionality they would not would use, much less want.

Don't see how this would really benefit either party enough to take down Microsoft. And besides, they would monopolize the industry if did manage to take old big M down.

PSP and iPhone are considered competitors in the portable market as well. And I like the PSP, I dont want Apple touching it.

The only reason Apple is still around in the first place is due to government bailouts back in the 80's/90's and anti-monopolization laws.

I don't see how Microsoft is an enemy to both Sony and Apple . . . Maybe in ONE or TWO areas of the company, but you know . . . it's not like they're all competing with the same type of products and all.

You know . . . I rather LIKE variety and such. I rather like owning products from each company because they each have differences I enjoy.

I think some people want to create a world where there is but ONE company for each type of product . . . Remember Taco Bell in Demolition Man? I would rather starve.

PS--I miss the olden days when I didn't know how widespread and tragic and horrible fanboyism really was. Back then, it was just a joke among friends. Now I see it's become a monster wreaking havok away from video games even. Are so many people really THAT loyal to companies?

Well as far as Microsoft and Apple go they pretty much are purely rivals.

But Sony's only beef with Microsoft is in the gaming market. Which would not warrant taking them down, especially since they use Microsoft products in their products.

On top of that I don't think Apple would let Sony make mac's. Sony Loses much more than it would gain. Unless Apple would allow Sony to buy and merge Microsoft with Sony.
