OXCGN writer takes a solemn look at how other countries are treated with regards to how Matchmaking simply does NOT work for those outside of Nth America.

With more developers steering away from the older ways to the newer not-so friendly ways of matchmaking.

Makes for an interesting and eye-opening read.

We may live at the “arse end of the world“, as former Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating infamously said, but we deserve better than half-arsed matchmaking.

Multiplayer is one of the main reasons that many gamers purchase Gold Xbox Live membership; to gain the ability to face off against their friends and many other gamers around the world in the game of their choice.

Many games have come and gone, all featuring different methods in handling multiplayer, but so far none have come close to perfecting it so that everyone is happy.

Halo 3, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Gears of War 2, just to name a few, feature what seems to now be the norm for online multiplayer on the Xbox 360: matchmaking.

Gears of War 2 has moved away from what many fans of Gears War loved, which is the ability to host your own game and allow people to search for it then join.

It may sound strange but matchmaking, even with no preferences has always worked fine for me. Of course most of the games I play seem to have really good servers, like Resistance and Metal Gear Online.

Gears of War 2 = PATHETIC.
    I waited 11 minutes for a match.

No game has ever created such an issue. Since I happen to pay for XBL, please allow me the pleasure of getting into a goddamn game. Oops and then I get kicked for poor connection..

And this is why OnLive will fail. We have enough bloody trouble with hardware middlemen and physical software, let alone attempting to stream the damn thing to us here in New Zealand!

I agree completely. Australia, as per usual, always gets the tail end of everything. On one hand, it's easily to get pissed with companies and for extremely good reason. On the other, from a business point of view it's hard to blame them. Australia as a whole only hits the population of about LA or some place like that as I recall. Still it's hard to excuse companies when it's a simple problem to fix.

Just think how bad it would be if OnLive went global. Aussies using it would be having crazy bad times.

I prefer both, matchmaking is good because you get consistent full games and servers selection is good because you can choose what map etc you want to play.

Thats what i thought it would be like. Then I got XBL....
It really is tragic in regards to how behind console infastructure is.
People were regarding XBL as the second coming of christ with console-online gaming. It a step back by means of years in terms of functionality and ease of use. Anyone who considers XBL/PSN to be sufficient by any standards; then kudos, because I simply cannot stand its setup when comparing it to the PC.

God knows what a shitstorm i'd brew about Gears 2 multiplayer and shitty matchmaking, but my mere being here is enough to show my uncradled fury. I need only make my presence known.
