The Wii's Wiimote and Playstation 3's Sixaxis controller are two recent examples of motion controls in video gaming. But do they beat good ol' fashioned button pressing? Are they a step in the right direction of a more interactive gaming experience? Kotaku asks the question: Do you even like motion controls?

You probably know oodles about us - more than you even want to, we're sure. But, hey, we'd like to know about you. That way you won't be some faceless blob - and we might feel a tinge of guilt when we ban ya. Or not, because really we're incapable of human emotion.

So, our question is:

Do you even like motion controls?

With certain games, motion control works like a charm and can really seriously add to the game, and also make it easier to play compared to using normal button pressing. But in other cases, it can completely break a game so freakin much.

Great if it's pulled off for the most part, sucks if it doesn't work well.

Controls of any kind are good when they work and bad when they don't.

They're kinda fun to use sometimes, when I feel like it.
They don't work too well on some games, though. =/

I have a Wii & a PS3. I rarely use the motion sensing on the PS3. If I have the option, I will choose good ol' buttons over motion control any day. Now on the Wii, some games are fun to use the motion control when it works correctly. It is not yet 100%. Games like Wii Sports is excellent with motion control, but others just plain suck as the controls, even working correctly, are just to clunky. Needless to say, I don't use the Wii very often at all.

I think if done correctly, the motion controls are awesome to use! The thing is . . . many games don't implement them nicely.

Motion controls make things either better, interesting or just plain old full of fail really.

I loved MP3 for its controls, yet found them very unnescesary and gimmicky in Super Mario Galaxy.

They just need to be used creatively like Nintendo is always saying they'll do, rather than just flick it here and there.

If anyone knows a game (other than the fps's) that does this then please tell me.

Motion controls can be great, but there are so few games that inplement them properly. The main problem seems to be that many devs making games for the Wii (and sometimes even Nintendo themselves) believe that "waggling" = innovative controls. It doesn't. Shaking a remote is as tedious as mindless button mashing, especially if it doesn't even remotely resemble the actions that are being performed on screen.

I won't even mention the Sixaxis controller.

Unless, of course, the action in the game is actually a shaking motion (Eg, Zack and Wiki, Wario Land), then I'm fine with "waggling".

I agree, though with the sixaxis, a very small handful of games do implement it pretty well.

Certain games, yeah totally, but games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl feel way weird.

As for the Wii, I don't think they need to keep making future influences of it. >__

Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer good old button mashing over waving my arms around. Sure motion controls can be fun, but some games just use it to a point where it is overused.

i ONLY like motion controls in the case of some PS3 games where they only compliment the regular button controls, such as in Lair where you can control the dragons flight with motion, but use buttons for doing everything else.

but the majority of Wii games where you rely exclusively on motion controls is just total BS.

They're a gimmick. Gimmick on the Wii, gimmick on the PS3 through the SIXAXIS.

I dont like it man. Because when you remove all the smoke and veil of it, what are you left with? A game. If I want motion, I'll go for a walk. Begrudgingly. Motion control, as it is at the moment, doesnt offer as much direct control; or the illusion of it anyway; as button mashing and analogue stick movement. And seeing as this is, a virtual, manufactured situation, there's no excuse for concedeing any amount of player control. Because if you take that to it's ultimate conclusion, then it'll no longer even be a game. Motion control, it was a nice idea in theory. Hasnt really worked so far in practise, though. Same as communism.

The sixaxis has been shot down a lot. But recently I've played FLOWER, and it has been the best experience I've had of motion control. I love the game and the motion control in it. It's better than any wii game implementation of motion control except wii-sports.

It's fun to use but as it has been said not enough games put it to good use.
Then other games are too clunky with it :\

Depends entirely on how the motion controls are used. As long as there's some level of 1:1 in there and it isn't just mindless waggle I don't mind it, although the only games I've played I enjoyed it in were Metroid Prime 3 and Madworld, for the former of which only used motion controls a handful of times throughout the game, and it nearly always constituted to twisting or pumping something, and when the actions are used like that I do believe they're a good idea. As for Madworld is was just downright enjoyable for some reason, although whether thats's down to the controls themselves can be debated.
The only games I really think work with the 'motion' controls as a major focus are games that have something that would work in 1:1, such as swords for example in which in can make it more immersive and fun, games in which the basis is imitating a real life action such as Wii Sports or in a Horror games, and hopefully Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and The Feel (I think that's the title) will make good use of them.
Now as for the pointer, that's a completely different story, and I do hope Nintendo continues it's use in future consoles and there's potential that MS and Sony enable a device similar for use in games that work with it, namely Shooters.
