There is no doubt that the original Bioshock was a great game. But David Houghton of Gamesradar doesn't think a sequel is neccessary. Go to the source to find out why...

So, we've heard the devs' opinions on BioShock 2. Unsurprisingly, they like their own game. But as Charlie pointed out in the intro to that feature, even the biggest BioShock fan must be skeptical. And that's where I come in.

Let’s just get one thing straight from the start. I adore BioShock. Seriously. To the degree that I could quite happily get into a knife fight to defend its honour. It’s a rare indulgence of the universe for a game to come along which seems to have been so perfectly designed for you and you alone, but 2K Boston’s magnum opus was exactly one of those occasions for me.

Ignoring the obvious monetary justification (in fact the only justification), there is no need for a sequel to BioShock. The original game was complete by its end, as a product, as an experience, as a story and as a statement. It wasn’t a vague, open-ended scenario, ripe for the franchise photocopier as most games we play are. It was an intelligent and deliberately-designed whole, with a very definite story, manifesto and agenda which went beyond the basic visceral thrills of videogame shooters.

I don't especially care. So long as the gameplay is good, and the story isn't utter crap, I'll play it.

Meh, I read this article a short while ago XD I guess I should start submitting these types of articles, since I frequent GamesRadar often anyhow.

I'm pretty sure it was on GameGrep just some time ago as well. At least that's where I found it.

I'd have to disagree with this guy. Whilst I will agree it isn't necessary, that doesn't mean it's a bad idea and can't be good (and most sequels are unnecessary; unnecessary doesn't equate to bad). And to think that being a Big Daddy and fighting Big Sister is the only thing there is to this game is rather naive. This is a Bioshock game; you honestly expect there to not be twists and turns throughout the game? By the same logic Bioshock 1 was just a random guy falling into Rapture.

Also, the writer's sucking Levine off way too much. 'In order to remain quintessentially Bioshock it need Levine's guiding hand...' Can you say, stalker? Come on, if he had just given all of his ideas and left them to make Bioshock 1, it would have still been as good, if not just a little worse (but still brilliant). Right now they have all of those ideas from Bioshock 1, so they don't need him.

This game isn't about achieving what Bioshock achieved, it isn't about being as revolutionary and it isn't about being completely new, fresh and eye opening. That doesn't mean it's a terrible idea, it just means you're going to have to accept change you big baby.

In what way was Bioschock revolutionary?

I mixed up revolutionary and eye opening. My bad.

      That is pretty wanky.
Nevertheless, I'm glad someone made the point...the game to me really feels complete unto itself. I'd rather it didn't get milked even a bit. Much like Dead Space...
I'll give the benefit of the doubt, but yeah..there's too many signs pointing to these games being contrived. It's understandable, just very unfortunate.
