Everyone knows that Ocarina of Time is one of the best Zelda games ever created. What a lot of people didn't know, including myself, is that Miyamoto apparently wanted the game to be in first person, not third person. If the game didn't have Link showed as both a child and as an adult, that probably would have happened.

So now, we all know a new Zelda game is in works for the Wii, and there's a lot of people with high hopes that this Zelda game will be revealed at E3. Miyamoto went down to Retro Studios himself, suggesting the game be in first person. Personally, it will be weird trying to play a Zelda game in first person and not third; I've played every single Zelda game and every single game was in third person. It will take some adjusting and getting used to, but I think it could work out. Seems like this might be a welcomed idea.

We know a new Zelda is in the works for Wii, and a lot of fans want it to be shown at this year’s E3. GDC brought us a unique DS Zelda that involves trains, but what will the console version give us.

Ocarina of Time, for it’s time, was a hugely popular and creative title for not only Zelda but for the genre as well. What many people don’t know is that Miyamoto wanted this Zelda to be in a first person perspective. This never came to be since Nintendo wanted to show Link as a child and an adult, but it did make it into another game, Metroid Prime.

While in development, Miyamoto visited Retro Studios and suggested they make the game a FPS. This feature was a huge risk for the franchise, yet in the end has paid off, because of it’s advantages for not only a shooter but for exploration as well. Something Miyamoto has stated before with Zelda:

"I thought that the FPS system would be the best way of enabling players to take in the vast terrain of the Hyrule Field. Besides, by not having the player's character on the screen, we can spend more time and machine power on creating enemies and the environments.”

This might sound a little drastic, and some fans might not like this but Miyamoto keeps stating that Nintendo will take the Zelda franchise on a different route.

“I think that Zelda is a franchise that does need some big new unique ideas. And so the team right now is very focused on trying to find those ideas.”

With Miyamoto wanting a first person feature for Zelda on the N64, then making Metroid a FPS on the Gamecube, will this gen finally be the time Zelda went first person? It wouldn’t surprise us.

I hope not. The third person view is too big a part of the Zelda series to change it now. It wouldn't have the same feeling if they changed it to first person.

yea the targeting system would then become not so useful then when fighting several enemies at once since in thrid person you could keep you eyes on the other enemies as well as the one you are going for. i think it would be too limiting to put zelda in first person.

I always thought the wii one was gonna be first person. Third person is quite a staple aspect of Zelda though; that'd be like changing Link's outfit from green to red

In Ocarina of Time and The Minish Cap, you can change his out fit to red...

It wouldn't be horrible, but I think it would be better if that was simply an option. I think it would be a bad idea to make a new zelda game 100% first person when every single zelda game in the past was 3rd person.

Don't do it! Think of the children!

I actually think that it would be a cool change, but I'd rather have the third-person view.

It would be cool if it did, but did it in a way that you can alternate between 1st and 3rd, or a 3rd person fixed view.

This is Zelda, not Elders Scrolls, I mean I usually welcome change, but first person? I hope not, not for Zelda...

Even if they did though, I love the series so much I would get it anyways....

And that's why nintendo still has consumers for their products

Begrudgingly so, that is very true.

    I'd welcome it.

Anything to make the series feel fresh.

you mean like what they did to metroid, and how nobody gave a shit? why not just ruin zelda, too, nintendo - i doubt many people are even paying attention anymore.

That's a little different. For Metroid they were totally changing its genre. Shooters work best in first person, and it worked well. The Metroid Prime games are very highly acclaimed, so I don't know what that "nobody gave a shit" was all about.

Zelda on the other hand, is something that needs to stay in the 3rd person action adventure genre in order to be Zelda.

I think Nintendo is trying to emulate the success of the Elders Scrolls games tbh.

Hm, sounds cool. I really don't need to play OoT for like the 5th time, so I'll welcome the change, even if it is just a poor mans oblivion. Perhaps FPS isn't the best idea, but dammit, it would be nice to actually try something different.

Besides, Nintendo can do whatever they god damn please, they are number one, they have such a rabid loyal fanbase who'd buy it if they turned it into a hentai game.

First person Hylian sex game... I would hit that!

Yeah it'll be in first person.

It'll be an on rails slasher.

    Blaze May 22, 09
That's gonna suck. They could have added more FPS sections and more bow and arrow emphasis instead of the whole game.

Perhaps changing it so that even when it is locked onto a target you have to aim with the pointer could work. But I cannot see myself swinging my sword, or pushing blocks in first person...

Besides I take long enough to find switches as is. Unless the brought back a fairy that flew over to all of them but where would the fun in that be?
