The announcement of Super Mario Galaxy 2 was one of the highlights of Nintendo's E3 press conference, with many fans excited about playing the next chapter in Mario's 3D adventures.
But was the announcement a bad omen? Did it crystalise everything Nintendo is doing wrong lately? Gamesradar thinks so, and here's why...

What did you think of Nintendo’s E3 press conference then? The usual inane blandathon, drenched in the acrid juices of casual lifestyle aspiration? Though so. But at least they gave us a look at the new Mario game. One of those can save any year’s line-up, right? Well no. On reflection we don’t think that’s the case any more.

In fact we feel that rather than the glowing beacon of inventive hardcore lovin’ we’ve come to expect, Super Mario Galaxy 2 actually crystalises everything the current Nintendo is doing wrong. It could even be a death knell. Stay with us on this one.

The article did an amazing job of summing up how I feel about the announcement. As much as Nintendo will tell me it's the next Mario game, spiritually, I won't consider it the next step in the franchise. It's just Galaxy 2.0, not Mario 2.0.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still picking it up nonetheless since Reggie said the difficulty is being upped, keeping the core audience in mind.

Hm, well it's the first direct Mario sequel to be on the same console, isn't it? But yeah, it's not a major step, I was actually hoping for Mario to go back to the 64-bit route, but that's not to say I didn't love Galaxy and wasn't interested in the sequel's trailer...it really looks amazing.

No, actually it's not. It is if you're excluding Super Mario Bros. 1, 2 and 3 and Super Mario World and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, than technically, it is. But if you're referring to the 3D series, than yes it is.

      I wasn't too satisfied with E3 08, but SMG2 should be fun.

Alarmist wankery at its finest with core vs. casual bullshit, omg Nintendo is dying, fads, etc.

Wii Fit is not killing the goddamn industry. Nintendo is not imploding on itself. "Hardcore" gamers are not as important as 95% of them think they are; this goes to fanboys and non-fanboys alike.

What happened to just playing games that are and will be fun, and not try to tell other people that their tastes suck based on bullshit-filled self-contrived notions of what a "game" should be.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be an awesome game. Isn't that all that really matters?

I totally agree haha. I just like anticipating a game and just having fun. It shouldn't really be much else.

Okay... Super Mario Galaxy is more of the same - Metroid Prime (or more recently Other M) is not a real Metroid.

Sorry, but there's no happy medium between these two things. Not just for Nintendo either.

how is it not a real metroid?

      Its basically the original metroid!

Fans have been shouting at nintendo for a 2.5D metroid ever since it made the jump to 3D.

Dread was supposed to be Other M but it was cancelled and know that this finally showed up, metroid fans can shut the hell up about what Retro did to metroid. (even if I think they made it better)

A 2.5 metroid was the only thing that saved ninty from totally selling my wii. That and Silent hill.

And if Reggie really did read the blogs he would have changed EVERYTHING shown in Nintendos E3 conference.
      Everything.

Those statements have no reflection on my opinion, just the opinion of the hardcore gaming masses (or at least, Nintendo fan boys until they actually played the game).

well your statement didn't say you didn't like the new metroid you said it wasn't a real metroid.

Its okay if you don't like the other M. But it is a real metroid game.

Hell even that game didn't make me wish I got that hour back from nintendo's conference. Total waste of my time.

Never saw it this way, but it does have a point. It shows just how far the casual market is starting to cut into the hardcore with Nintendo.

      HisServant77 Jun 4, 09
No . . . It goes to show . . . "If it aint broke, don't fix it!" and "Why mess with a good thing if you know it works?"

Haha, seems that way, doesn't it?

Galaxy 2 may not reshape the industry as we see it, but if it turns into a fun game then where's the problem?

We probably wouldn't see an evolution of a Mario platformer until the next gen console anyway if past track record is anything to go by.

And this is somehow a problem with just Nintendo? Did I somehow miss the announcement of a million new IP's this E3, all completely different from anything else ever? Last I look, all but two or three "big games" announced at E3 were direct sequels that look and play exactly like their previous game! Let's see, FF13, two new Halos, two new Metal Gears, etc. etc. etc. And isn't the idea of a "sequel" anyway, to provide more content within a context you already enjoy?

This is why I don't read Gamesradar anymore. Their articles are idiotic flame bait, all of them.

Your joking by mentioning FFXIII, it is neither a direct sequel or bears many similarities to FFXII, FFXI or FFX at all. I think Halo's starting to get milked as well, but we haven't even seen anything of the second game yet, it mightn't even be a FPS. Both Metal Gear Solid games aren't direct sequels either, and both are introducing new elements. It's okay to make a sequel, but Nintendo look like they are spinning off the very same game all over again, their not the only one to do it, but damn they're usually above that with their big First Part Games.

How do we not know they implemented more elements in Super Mario Galaxy 2? They've only showed a trailer that showed Yoshi, and neglected to go into further detail.

It looks the same? MGS:Rising will look the same as MGS4, except with a different person you'll see the back of all the time. MGS:R and SMG2 have no difference in this regard; they'll both be running off of existing engines, except you have different locales to deal with.

MGS rising is an action game, as it clearly states "Lightning bolt action" instead of "tactical espionage action". MGS:r will be a different game, where as mario will be galaxy in a new location. Please, Ninty have done it for years and years, do you think there going to change the game now? Of course not.

I'm not saying "OMG MGS:R is going to be the same as MGS4". Likewise, you can't say for sure that Galaxy 2 will bring nothing new to the table yet.

That and Nintendo's not the only one that does as you say. Not in a million years.

I'm pretty sure I can say it wont bring anything new to the table because they would have called it a totally new name.

Not galaxy 2, which just implies that its going to be Galaxy again with some new stuff added. Same ole characters, same ole bad guys, same ole gameplay. Just watch.

Making one sequel to a game isn't just a cheap way of making money, unless it's done to the point where quality has been absolutely forgotten.

Any EA sport title will show you that.

          Super Mario Bros.

Yes and what are you getting at? I'm not denying those series are the same. So there's a moot point. You couldn't even come up with an argument to counter me so you post that.

          lol.

          This is what you said:

          quote

The series I listed off are those that have had games that brought something new to the table while also being "numbered".

Those series also all approach things in a completely different manner than Mario.

Please tell me you are mocking something through Yoshi... I would hate to see you mock Yoshi as I respect you, and would have hoped you agreed he is a awesome.

Haha, no I wasn't mocking Yoshi I like Yoshi, which was why I was joking about the game having Yoshi!

I stopped reading at "crystialises", if you can't spell your title right, you obviously didn't put enough effort in it for it to be good.

      Slumpy monkey Jun 5, 09
It was spelt right, 'crystalises' can be spelt with a z or an s.

      Much like materialize and materialise.
