Jim at Resume Play details how he first got into the MMO genre in 2007, and how they have had a definate effect on the way he plays and sees other video games. He also goes on to describe his most anticipated MMOs of 2010.
I had never laid my hands on a single bit of MMO action until late 2007. Don’t get me wrong, I had always wanted to play one since the days of Everquest; but to be fair I was a bit young to be shelling out subscription fees and upgrading my computer. However, after hearing about World of Warcraft’s global success of 11 million players and counting, I had just finished with Warcraft III for the PC and I was intrigued. I had actually purchased the client disc for World of Warcraft a few months prior to playing it, but wasn’t sure WHEN to play it. Luckily, my older brother was on hand with half of the subscription fee as we pitched in together in order to buy a solid flow of subscription cards, and that was how I came to play my first MMO.

The Agency, haven't looked into much but sounds good (read about it in Play)
Those that do have a monthly fee are constantly building upon the game and expanding it. You're paying for people to sit in the dev pen and create stuff for your game, or to fix bugs and optimize it, or to launch new servers and keep them healthy. You're constantly connecting to foreign computers for information, whereas a single player or lan-based game doesn't.
I've been with WoW for 4 and a half years and been in all the betas. Probably the only game I could leave WoW for would be another MMO, and it would have to be after I've farmed the current raid enough times to have everything I want.
