Jim at Resume Play details how he first got into the MMO genre in 2007, and how they have had a definate effect on the way he plays and sees other video games. He also goes on to describe his most anticipated MMOs of 2010.

I had never laid my hands on a single bit of MMO action until late 2007. Don’t get me wrong, I had always wanted to play one since the days of Everquest; but to be fair I was a bit young to be shelling out subscription fees and upgrading my computer. However, after hearing about World of Warcraft’s global success of 11 million players and counting, I had just finished with Warcraft III for the PC and I was intrigued. I had actually purchased the client disc for World of Warcraft a few months prior to playing it, but wasn’t sure WHEN to play it. Luckily, my older brother was on hand with half of the subscription fee as we pitched in together in order to buy a solid flow of subscription cards, and that was how I came to play my first MMO.

I personally detest MMOs, maybe due to the fact I've hardly played any, but their not really my game and it's usually cause I can never get into it. I'm never really interested in getting better at it and etc. Good article though

If there is one thing I hate about MMO's, it's that they cost the bloody subscription fee. I think it's fair if your using their online service or whatever but they shouldn't make it so hard to set up private servers and should implement a LAN/Single player option as well. It's just straight up money grabbing when your forced to pay to play.

I agree with you ISDF, but with free MMOs like DCUO and The Agency coming out, I hope you will get rooted into your first MMO soon enough.

source for freeness please. I didn't hear anything about DCUO being F2P.

The Agency, haven't looked into much but sounds good (read about it in Play)

MMORPG's are fantastic. I was loving WoW for a good nine months and yes, even something as simple as runescape when I was alot younger. The Free MMO games lose nothing in quality compared to P2P titles, and I think the push for FREE MMO games with high production values do nothing but good for the genre.

^^ couldn't agree with you more, especially in times like these, people are being cheap-ass gamers and so free-MMOs are sounding as appealing as ever.

The MMOs with no monthly fee tend to produce less content and then offer them in the form of expansion packs.

Those that do have a monthly fee are constantly building upon the game and expanding it. You're paying for people to sit in the dev pen and create stuff for your game, or to fix bugs and optimize it, or to launch new servers and keep them healthy. You're constantly connecting to foreign computers for information, whereas a single player or lan-based game doesn't.

I've been with WoW for 4 and a half years and been in all the betas. Probably the only game I could leave WoW for would be another MMO, and it would have to be after I've farmed the current raid enough times to have everything I want.
