I have been a huge fan of the God Of War series since I first popped in the demo disc of God Of War 1 on my PS2. After I was done, I headed down to target and the clerk was nice enough to let someone under the age of 18 buy the game.

God Of War is famous for many reason, one in particular is its pure violence. Kratos has a blood lust, and in every game it gets more and more violent. I never had a problem with it, and am in not a sick freak who gets off at that. But I do enjoy a violent game every once in a while as well as a peaceful game such as Flower.

Now that Kratos has made the jump to next-gen, fans rejoiced, as did I. I waited patiently for E3 so I can finally see Kratos beat the living hell out of Greek creatures and gods. As I watched the E3 demo, I realised that the game, like the previous was much more violent. Then it got to the part were Kratos rips off the head of Helios (you can watch it below) and realised "wow, they really went all out with the violence". Showing off in full detail Helios and Kratos facial emotions as well as the blood dripping and veins dangling from his neck. Quite gruesome.

So I ask you Greppers and Neomembers, do you think that Santa Monica took it to far with this? Or do you think that it wouldn't be God Of War without all blood and gore and that the Ps3 lets the Dev's achieve there goal? Will the media go berserk over this, much like when any 'too violent' game comes out?

I do expect a lot more violence in the retail version and while I do think that part alone was a tad bit to over board, I still plan on buying this day one.

As a form of media, you could compare it's shock factor to a film like Saw. That is renouned for being gruesome, but it has suitable ratings for the contenet. And so does GoW. The only way the media should go beserk over the violence is if little kids who shouldn't be playing it, are.

exactly, and the Saw films werent really that bad, they did always look cheesy and obviously not real. but its nothing you dont normally see on shows like CSI anyway.

You keep the head as a power up to light dark tunnels later on in the game.

Uh, too violent? Yeah he is the God of War. He isn't God of Flowers and Butterflies.

Nothing is ever too violent. Personally i want violence to get more and more depth to it, i want it to be so detailed and gory that it may actually make me believe it is real. So far i just laugh and relish the blood, i almost crave this kind of violence in games it is escapism at it's finest as i cannot rip heads off in reality.

I'd always figured that the God of War series rides on its gameplay mechanics and its over the top violence. Without one or the other, the series is pretty generic.

I do like to have a lot of blood and gore in the games I play, but if every game was bloody and gory I think it'd start to get old if every game I picked up was gruesome. But some games just need the gore, like Gears of War or God of War.

Eh, I generally don't care for games with tons of blood or gore; movies too. It's not like I can't take it, but I just don't have as much fun playing games/watching movies where the violence is extremely graphic.

I played the demo at E3. It's actually pretty gruesome. There's a cutscene where Kratos rips this ogre's eyeballs out. Blood and chunks of brain splatter everywhere.

Considering the reputation God of War has I always thought gore like that was standard.

    I'm guessing it was exaggerated.
