Without naming names of games specifically, Bobby Gonzalez from Platform Nation goes into what makes good DLC: Length, Quantity, and my favorite (and most agree with), for the developers to start making the DLC only AFTER they game's release.

DLC is great. It breathes life into games that have been under your bed for a few weeks. Good DLC makes gamers excited to dive back into familiar worlds. Bad DLC makes gamers hesitant to trust the gaming industry as a whole. Companies have to stop viewing DLC as a cheap money maker and start viewing it as something that can strengthen their relationship with gamers, something that can bring us all together.

I dont like DLC man, once I've bought the game, I ain't paying anything extra. If it was that important they could have put it in the game in the first place. Just trying to squeeze more money out of you that's what it is.

If you think that way though, games would take so much longer to make. Devs would have to put everything they could imagine into the game and thats not really cost effective nor really possible. There is always room DLC.

But on the negative side of things, companies are deciding to cut stuff from the original game to later sell it as DLC or even just going 'meh, we'll make it later and sell it.' Thats the mentality that ruins DLC. But on the positive side of things, you can ALWAYS add to any game.

Yeh it seems to me man that the second one there is what's more common on DLC; cutting it out and selling it back to us.

As for expansion on the game, that used to be the point of sequels though, you know. They make the game they see now, then when they get an expansion on that vision, they make a sequel. This article about sums it up really, DLC could be something that adds to the experience, but more often than not, it actually takes away from it and then hands it back to you at double the price.

If it seems like it's just been deliberately left off from the actual game so they can make more money (I'm thinking Tomb Raider and Oblivion here). If it's something that's been given actual thought (Lost and Damned, Fallout 3 DLC) then I enjoy it.
