This is a somewhat satirical opinion piece by Brandon of TBMAG, regarding the overratedness of Final Fantasy VII, and its continued "whoring" by Square Enix.

Rather than being seen as a classic and a bar raised in video game production, FFVII has been heralded as the pinnacle of the virtual digital experience. There are some of you thinking that I’m speaking in extreme hyperbole; you obviously don’t understand the extent of fanboy-dom that has been created through the use of a brooding main character, a huge sword, and summons. FFVII has become a form of denial in gamers across the world. Many of them remember it as the first/last great game of their now spent youth; therefore, they hold onto its memory as a symbol of “a better time in games.”

This “Nostalgic Disorder” occurs in all brackets of society and is in reference to everything from walking to and from school to lemonade stands on the neighborhood corner. There is always something undeserving in people’s past that they will hold to a divine height in hopes of keeping whatever aspects of themselves they or the world had at that time. FFVII just happens to be the first true and extreme example of this.

The only problem i have with this is that he actually thought that DoC was new and creative at any point when playing it. Crisis Core was great on its own DoC not so much.

Well to be fair, it's not something I'd seen before; no titles really have the arrogance to make a sequel in the most contrasting genre possible, a JRPG to a third-person shooter, with one of the original's main characters the gunslinger.

I ment it as a game on it's own merit and not as a ff7 compilation game. DoC was a terrible, terrible, terrible shooter that would have sold 10 copies if it had another name.

Overrated? I wouldn't say so. I thought that it deserved everything it got. Not the best game of all time but still a great game by any standards.

I was going rant a bit about why FFVII does deserve alot of it's praise. But the author is right. FFVII was a damn fine game, but Squeenix has been whoring the crap outta it with squels/prequels that range from being good to downright terrible, and fanboys lap it up as though anything with "FFVII" tacked on the box is pure gold.

Meh i admit they are whoring the crap outta it too, but Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core were all very decent sequels/prequels. Granted i haven't actually finished Crisis Core yet but so far i think it's absolutely fantastic.

As for the actual game itself, it is no were near overrated as one of the best Final Fantasy's to ever grace a console.

I don't know man, I'd agree with the article that most of us have just accepted them for the sake it was something more about one of our favourite games. If you removed the Final Fantasy from all of them, would you honestly remember or care for any of those ever again? Advent Children was weak, the best of the spin-offs but still - there was a thin plot and piss poor character design. Dirge of Cerberus wasn't good even if you do love Final Fantasy VII and Crisis Core, well, it's just Kingdom Hearts without most of Kingdom Hearts, introducing needless characters like Genesis and as linear as a book.

All of the titles are good at best, one at a real stretch, so in comparison to Final Fantasy VII which is a classic in terms of RPGs, they do nothing but tarnish its legacy.

Agree entirely, Gothic Girl. Great game gone prostitute.
Advent Children is the worst of the lot in my opinion -- no substance at all, pure fan service.

No one was attempting to deny it is a good game, but the fact is some people still claim it to be the best RPG ever, or the best game ever, which is just dumb.

Is it really? I mean, people have different opinions about everything. What's your favorite game? I'm pretty sure that many would not agree with you, regardless of what game you like the best.

I for one really, really love this game. It's still in my top 3 games ever. Though, as for the "best game ever made", I wouldn't go as far as to call it that. There's simply too much difference between games, genres and stuff like that to even try to figure out which one is the best of them all.

That was my main point. There is no problem having a favorite game. But until every game ever has been made, any claims that it FFVII is the best games will ever get, and the pinnacle of RPGs, is faulty.

That's a ridiculously baseless statement. "best game ever" implies that it was the best game made up until the current. Obviously, there's nothing wrong with people saying it except that there's massive differences in games out there and make everyone's opinions on the matter fairly invalid. However, saying that it can't be true because "every game hasn't been made yet" is just ridiculous.

You know what game reminded me of this article? Ocarina of time. People say that Ocarina of time is overrated but it too deserves everything it gets.

Ocarina hasn't been whored out much (if at all). And there seem to be far fewer stupid Zelda fans -- you'd think it'd be the other way around since it's more "kiddy"...

It won't let me reply to you moonrise, but the point is there will always be new games, and holding onto an old game as "the best game ever" out of nostalgia does not rightfully make it the best game ever. These games will be supplanted by better games, its the nature of the industry. FFVII was amazing then, and its good now, but hardly the best ever. Such an absolute statement cannot be made without being arbitrarily chosen, and influenced by personal bias.

      Moonrise Jun 18, 09
Well no shit it can't be arbitrarily chosen. In fact, didn't I specifically say just that in my post? There's massive differences across genres that make it impossible to really refute or solely defend a "best game ever", but that doesn't make it really "ridiculous" for people to make those claims keeping in mind that it is their opinions, after all. To be honest, I'm not sure any RPGs have come out since then that would really be able to dethrone FFVII. If anything, the best would be from the PS1 generation or sooner.

But the fact remains that some people flat out ignore perfectly good games because "nothing could be better than FFVII". That is the kind of thinking we are trying to correct.
