A look at how the gaming industry compares to the film industry and how the various video press websites need to adapt to meet the new realities of casual gaming, namely in who exactly reviews casual games.

Movies have their critics, television has their critics, and fitness videos are covered by the fitness press. I’m not saying game journalists are incapable of covering a wider range of subjects; most of the EA Sports Active reviews are very well done, but most are also written by people who know games and not necessarily fitness. In this case, the product they are reviewing is less about being a game than it is being a fitness tool. In that context perhaps the game is better reviewed by the fitness community.

Just discussed this with my mates a couple of days ago. I think this article has some points, but overall, it comes down to "Video Games" are a medium, just like Film is (much like stated on the page). Film critics review all films, no matter the genre, action, comedy, documentary, etc etc. This is how video critics should be, and I believe are.

This article sort of insults the writers, as though they wouldn't be able to differentiate between a Gears of War versus a Wii Fit title, knowing the audiences of both games would be different. I know there are shitty sites out there, but overall I would much rather have a gaming site cover all aspects of gaming (and if something should lapse over into another medium, such as EA Sports Active, then let a fitness magazine cover it as well, but I don't believe this should get in the way of an opinion from a reviewer of games I already trust).

The article brings some good points, but I don't think that new people should review casual games. I mean what does a fitness expert know about wii fit? yeah it is ment for excircise but its still 50% video game.
