TGS discusses why normally mandatory PS3 game data installations should be optional. Article discusses the reasons installs are beneficial, but should not be required.

"Developers need to stop mandating what PS3 gamers do with the hard drives they paid for, whether it’s 40 gig or 500. We shouldn’t be forced to sacrifice HDD space as consumers because developers don’t want to take the time to make games run well without installation."

I think most PC gamers prefer installs without a disk check (though those are easily bypassed anyway).
Also most installs take 20+ minutes these days~

Uhhh...i don't think that install time is the big issue. I think it's a space thing. Considering dozens of games require some form of install, ranging from .5 gig to over 5(!!!) many PS3 owners (of the 20, 40, 60, and 80 gig varieties)are finding it difficult to accommodate their disc based game installs simultaneously with PSN purchases.

Then just like a computer when you run out of space buy a bigger hard-drive. They are dirt cheap now literally. I remember on my old toshiba desktop it had a 1.6 GB hardrive that cost $250. For that today I could get 2 or 3 500GB 2.5" drives and 2 2TB 3.5" drives seriously it ain't a big deal

Or if you don't play a game for more then a month, uninstall it for other games, thats what I do on my 40 gig PS3.

It's the price of Blu-Ray, unfortunately. While games developed exclusively for the PS3 are starting to run without installs (Killzone 2 being a key example), developers for multiplatform games simply can't afford the extra time required to make a game run straight off a 50GB disc. It is an issue, but it's thankfully becoming less relevant as developers learn how to make Blu-Ray work for them.

Was just about to post something similar. It comes down the multiplatform games (for the most part). Exclusive games can run fine and beautifully (ie Killzone, as well as Uncharted).

Down with multiplatform, up with exclusives!

Can't say I've noticed any recent mandatory installs. Which games have recently had them? Bioshock was nearly a year ago.

And Resident Evil 5. A whopping 5 gig!

Odd.....I didn't notice any install for Prototype. I musta thought it was just a patch.....which seems to happen quite often these days. You pop in a new game and immediately have to download Version 1.02. That bothers me way more than a mandatory install, because it tells me they shipped a broken game LMAO

For taking up space, they should be optional. However the problems caused are so miniscule it doesn't really matter either way, it's just a really minor annoyance that you don't even notice soon enough.

Street Fighter and SCIV have optional installs.

To me, they should be optional simply because it gives more control over the gamer's bought products. Anything, to me, that gives the buyer more control over what they buy, is a plus.

It'd just be nice to have it as optional. I'd still always install even if I ran out of space (I'd buy a larger one or delete older ones), I'd install. I just like having options

Some need to be mandatory because they wouldn't run well without it. Then you would get people moaning about it lagging and how the devs are poor because they don't waste time on making it run perfect for PS3.
