A look at dialogue in gaming and its purposes. The end contains a few favorite quotes collected over the years. Everyone has some of their own! I know my list is way longer than what I wrote here.

Dialogue. You can find it in any game. Whether they are seen or read, every game has quotes; some are memorable, some are easily forgotten. Maybe we experience it while obliterating our friends on Xbox Live, or while we’re being chased by ghouls down a dark hallway with only a baseball bat for defense. Sometimes it waits, hidden in the depths of a game’s menus, quests, inventories, narration–or as easter eggs to be discovered and enjoyed. Any gamer who has ever laughed, wanted to break things, or felt their heartstrings being tugged at while enjoying a particular game was most likely influenced by a demonstration of superb writing.

Really, it depends on the game. In certain games, certain kinds of dialogue are important. In others, you want as little as possible. I prefer the games without, myself.

Pity they practically ignored MGS4, seeing as it had some of the best dialogue I've ever heard...

I have not yet gotten to play MGS4, so mentioning a game that I have no experience with as of yet is pointless. I wouldn't have been able to make any educated statements.

Had I known that, I wouldn't have said what I said. Sorry.

With storytelling in a game, the only thing more important than the visual aspect is the dialogue. Think FFX, Lost Odyssey, and MGS4.

"I'm no hero. Never was. I'm just an old killer, hired to do some wetwork."

Like, really. That cutscene wasn't even pre-rendered yet it was still so... Epic.
