The folks over at Dubious Quality took a long, hard look at the console market and asked the question, "What would the world be like without Wii?" I found this article to be rather interesting, and for the most part true. What do you think?

I think it's interesting to consider what this console market would look like, right now, if Nintendo hadn't created the Wii. Let's imagine that the Wii doesn't exist, and that Nintendo exited the console market after the Gamecube.

Is it possible that instead of all these magazine articles talking about how the gaming demographic is expanding rapidly, that instead we'd be seeing articles about the "great gaming crash?"

It is for the most part true, in-fact, scary about its truth.

I'll have to agree. It's interesting how going into things every body was saying that the wii would be a disaster and that it was too gimicky and that the ps3 would probably rule the console wars. Now as we get into things, you don't see commercials for the ps3 or 360 or their respective games anymore, you just see commercials for the wii and wii games. The wii is the only console I'd even be willing to buy at this point with the ridiculous price tags and it just looks fun as hell to play. I think the wii is shaping up to win the console wars. Kinda genius move on nintendo's part, and they needed it after the lame excuse for a game system they called the gamecube.

You'll see what people are gonna be saying about the Wii in 3 years time.

yea, it would be a much different market if the Wii wasn't around

Hmm, that's actually really true, like scary true. I mean if the Wii wasn't around, the PS3 still wouldn't be selling as well etc. That's weird >>.

My favorite part of the article:

"So take out the Wii. Have a console at $399 and one at $599. Have them selling, combined, about 600,000 units worldwide in April. You know what the story would be?

    Next-Gen is dead."

It's true. The Wii has really revitalized the console market. The sluggish sales of the PS3 and 360 would lead the press to believe that we were about to go through a "gaming crash."

I hate to sound like a fanboy, but its pretty much true.

I kinda agree, even though the Wii is just kind of like a party console, it's still revolutionary in it's own way.

The article does definately bring out alot of good points and I would have to agree with they say.

but going with Guticb, we will still be talking about the Wii in 3 years, still talking about the fun party factor, or will we want more...

Guticb is not a god he can't predict the future. There is no telling what will happen to the Wii in 3 years, all that matters is what is happening.

On the other side of the coin, will we still be gawking over HD graphics in three years, or will we be on to bigger and prettier systems in the works?

This is so true and really cool. When I bought a wii I hadn't been expecting it to go good at all I just wanted super smash bros brawl but now it's turning out great

    Nice title, clever. =)

I think the author of the article is probably on the right track, but I don't really think it'd be the next "gaming ice age" without the Wii. I think it would take one more generation of failed consoles for that to come about.

The last time the game market crashed, all it took was the Commodore 64 and many truly horrendous "games." E.T. the Video Game and Custer's Revenge in particular.

A great article, and a great read. As many have already said, I truly agree. The Wii is pretty much vital in the gaming market in order to maintain stability with how much it differs between the 360 and PS3.

And I forgot to mention that once again it appears that Nintendo has saved gaming.

I read the article and I agree. Without the Wii next gen would probably be dead. Thank goodness the Wii is around.

So...Wii saves the next gen by being the cheapest console available? Can't say I agree.

The PS2's not out of commission, it's still selling with damn good games as well. Cheap console with cheap games that still manage to be recognized over Next Gen games (ex. God of War 2) plus it can take almost any kind of Wii port (ex. Manhunt 2), granted it doesn't have the mobility but it has everything else. So I'm not really convinced.

No. Just..... no. They act as if nobody plays X Box/360.. or even PS2 for that matter. Not to mention the Computer game market.

There's also HUGE titles to come to the PS3 and 360 in a few months. MGS4, and Halo 3, anyone? Sorry, the gaming industry is just doing TOO good as a whole to simple die out.

Just another pretty article to make the Wii look like Jesus.

I suppose it would be a little worse, but it's interesting to think of.

It does spark some debate. Those who like Nintendo would be in a bad situation if Nintendo left. Those who don't like the Wii or even don't like Nintendo wouldn't be as bad off as others. But then, the whole gaming market may crash. It is quite interesting to think about.

The sexbocks would just outsell the PS3.

If the Wii wasn't created, then Nintendo wouldn't really have any money sources, well, except for the GC and the DS, but they aren't pulling in a whole bunch of money, so Nintendo is basically surviving off of the Wii, and hoping for the best.
