Ecks of The Gaming Dungeon takes a look at eight things that annoy him in his favorite genre, Role Playing Games, in hope that companies will avoid them in future. Hint: they won't.

I am a very big RPG fan. Since the SNES era I’ve been in love the genre. However as time has gone on, I’ve found myself more and more frustrated with the elements found in certain RPG’s. Usually these flaws aren’t a large problem and for the most part are fairly brief, but that doesn’t make me forget that these bothersome elements and missing functions limited the experience I had with an otherwise great game. “What kind of functions” you ask? Well…

Or the one where to have to go do 20 different side missions untill you finish one main quest.

Being an RPG lover myself I totally understand this article. Looking back I really see just how downright horrible The Last Remnant was. Literally over 90% of the game was pure grinding that you absolutely had to do if you wanted even the slightest chance of defeating the next boss, luck was a huge factor in every battle, the voice acting was disgusting and detracted from the story a lot, and TLR had a lot of so-called Limited Duration Events. Didn't talk to this random person in town at three specific places at three specific times? Too bad, you can't do this quest unless you play the game again. Oh, and by the way, that quest is needed for an achievement. Every once in a while I caught myself shouting, "Fuck you!" at the screen.

Ouch. I like it when trophies/achievements are a challenge to get, but that's just evil.

Man, as evil as you make it seem, The Last Remnant was an awesome and very fun to play to game.

Aren't those problems mainly to do with JRPGs?

They didn't even mention the worst one: annoying secret things in games that you would never in a million years figure out how to do without a strategy guide.

For example: How do you obtain the Zodiac Spear in FFXII? Well, naturally, you make sure NOT to open certain random treasure chests in the game, otherwise, the spear will disappear. Really, Square? Really? Is that intuitive in the slightest? How the hell would you figure that out on your own? Screw you.

That kinda falls under the side quest category though, its practically the same deal only with items. He should have mentioned it though.

      Pretty good list.

I played halfway through FFXII and it was so boring and dry I had to put it down. I was following a walkthrough and I know what you mean about the Zodiac Spear.

For anyone who doesn't know, the Zodiac Spear is an ultimate weapon you get near the end of the game, but there are three - yes, three treasure chests (that are just like every other normal chest in the game, same random placement, same crappy loot, nothing special about them) that if you open any one of those three treasure chests, chests which any gamer who didn't know about the Zodiac Spear before they even started playing the freakin' game, would open, the spear cannot be obtained.

      Really, Square? Really?

That's like Bungie releasing a new Halo game, and in the last level if you go out of your way you can get a freakin' awesome gun that owns everything, but wait! If, during the course of the game, you picked up any of the three special weapons, that are exactly like any other of the numerous weapons scattered throughout the map, then too freakin' bad!

He cites Star Ocean IV and says it's guilty of the inability to pause cutscenes.

But it's not, i just finished playing the main story and you can easily pause the cutscenes, all you have to do is press the xbox guide button and it'll pause.

    #1-100: RANDOM *bleep*ING BATTLES

    [/endlist]

But seriously, thats my main pet-peeve. As for the article, I agree with the creator about long, drawn-out animations and limited EXP gains at times. Those can be annoying.

I kinda find the RPG trait of stealing allies off you without warning to qualify for a list like this too. Still, good article. As much as I love RPGs I do find some of these traits quite worrying.

Oddly I never really cared about the long attack sequences in SOA. Meh.
