Silent Hill fans may have noticed that Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, the "re-imagining" of Silent Hill 1, looks very different than previous games in the series. Each Silent Hill game has used a similar concept for the creepy "Otherworld" dimension that players are thrust into in each game: A dark, warped, rust and blood covered hellhole...

ohhh....icky!

But Silent Hill: Shattered Memories has a new style for the "Otherworld". Instead of blood and rust, there is snow and ice. According to the developers, the reason for a snowy otherworld will factor into the plot...

ohhh....cold!

So what do fans think of this new Otherworld? A much-needed change of scenery, or a terrible idea?

Well this is certainly new information we haven't know since the game's first trailer, most definately. It's not like it's a topic that that's been argued to death about on most other gaming communities already, no siree.

Sarcasm aside I quite like it to be honest, I find the icy setting far creepier than the bloody setting of the original.

Good thing I didn't mark it as "news" then, eh?

This is downright traumatic. You just... You can't do that to Silent Hill. What's next, Akira Yamaoka isn't scoring it?

    Oh... I'm sad again...

Oh my god, that's absolutely terrible.

It's stayed as blood, rust and other disgusting stuff throughout the series, then on a REMAKE they decide to change it?

*bleep*in idiots is all i can say. The snowy theme looks goddamn terrible and isn't scary at all.

We can't judge it since it hasn't been released yet. Silent Hill has always been known for downright *bleep*ed up story telling.

If snow is here to replace the blood it's part of some elaborate traumatic story that ties in with Harry. (like Pryamidhead being Summerlands executioner)

Besides SH doesn't need blood and gore to be successful or scary. Plenty of games have done it before.
But I won't say much more until I play the game (at night of course). It is an interesting change in pace.

I prefer the gore and rust. It's just so... horribly disgusting. You really feel sorry for the poor bastards who get stuck in that situation. SH4 did it best imo...going deeper and deeper into Walter's Otherworld to the point where you had no idea if Henry would ever be able to escape even if he did somehow defeat Walter. Exploring the apartment filled with ghosts (however annoying they might have been), the parts of the building that seemed alive, watching Eileen slowly turn insane, and the ridiculous amount of gore, rot and blood thay was everywhere. It was all very surreal.

The ice and snow isn't as creepy, although it does give off a very cold and isolated feeling. I feel cold just looking at those screens.

But yeah, the gory otherworld isn't needed for every game since it reflects certain characters' subconcious. (remember Angela's version of Silent Hill was firey?). So the snow and ice will be a nice change....hopefully.
