According to Taiwan-based IC distributors, Sony recently increased orders for key PlayStation 3 components. We’re talking about enough parts to produce a million PS3s for the third quarter, which is much more than what Sony usually orders. What does it all mean? Mike Got Game presents a couple of theories.

Sony is up to something. DigiTimes recently revealed that the console maker "placed significant orders for key Sony PS3 components" from Taiwan-based IC distributors. In this case, "significant" equates to enough parts for producing a million PlayStation 3s for the third quarter.

It means that in the 3rd quarter they are expecting to sell more consoles as in the 3rd quarter a game by the name of Uncharted 2 is coming out. With all the hype of the original i feel not only will they sell 2 million copies of the game from original owners but many people will buy a Playstation 3 to play this game.

Anyone notice that theres the EXACT same article only a few news messages down? ANYWAY... why cant it just be that they are planning on selling a lot of systems? A lot of cool games are coming out. Why does it have to be something special?

I think they're doing it because of GT5. I know it hasn't been given an official release date but it's their biggest system seller ( MUCH bigger than GoW ).

I think its because all these great games are gonna be coming out around the same time the PS3s price drops to $250.

Common sense. The epic price drop/console sweep/holiday zerg rush that never quite happened is finally going to happen. Price cut, exclusives, price cut, tons of already released games with lower prices, and more price cut = about flippin' time Sony replanted the flag on blood-stained gamer ground.

I did mention price cut, right? Could have sworn I did...
