I am torn over the upcoming Bruckheimer Prince of Persia film adaptation. I like Jake, don't get me wrong, and he looks gruff and buff for the role, but there are some great, truly persian actors that look more like titular character than a tanned Jake. That said, I will give it a fair shake. Feeling nostalgic about classic PoP games, the gang here put together a small retrospective, highlighting some of the games in the long running franchise.

"To capture the fluid motions that would distinguish Prince of Persia from the glut of adventure video games released in the late '80s Jordan Mechner studied video and still pictures of his younger brother, David. Those are some modest roots for a franchise that has sold in the millions and, in 2010, see the release of a blockbuster film.

But how Mechner's Prince of Persia could inspire a reimagination that would become one of 2008's most popular holiday releases is a winding tale best told in bits. To help explain, we've compiled a chronological retrospective. Now you can learn how a kid jumping around the front yard became a thousand-polygon model leaping across hundred foot chasms."

Sands of Time > all. I've played all the games mentioned there, except PoP 3D, and imho, SoT is the best PoP game to date. PoP '08 takes the second place- the depressing Prince in the SoT sequels ruined the story, even though the gameplay was still great in them.

Nah, the newest Prince of Persia was good, but warrior within was better. You couldn't even die in the new Prince Of Persia, thus making it easy.

It's something of a misconception -- most games have checkpoints. More or less what the game does is instead of a death sequence, Elika saves you, and you restart near the point where you would've died, saving time, thereby affording seamless gameplay. Part of the point is the game is not even about dying vs. succceeding, it's about the experience and story (I'm basing this off an interview with the creator). Forget what you've known about video games...

The real issue with the game is the largely Quicktime event-based combat -- that's a real joy-killer. Not enough to ruin the beauty though.

I read your comment and nothing will ruin the beauty of it. I had never looked at Elika like that. I could cry.

Personally, I like the Sands of Time Trilogy more than the rest of the games. The new PoP was solid but the combat system ruined it for me. The original two were awesome, but I don't think they're quite as good as the SoT Trilogy. Never played 3D so I can't comment on that.

3D wasn't very good from what I understand.
Agreed though -- seems to be one of the rare instances where a revival actually succeeds the originals.

Two Thrones/Rival Swords have always been my favourite games and I look forward to the film
