Electronic Theatre delivers the latest Editor's Commentary Blog as a discussion on the pricing strategy of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Games on Demand service; are we paying a premium for home delivery?

I would suggest that, in fact there appears to be a total lack of strategy behind Microsoft’s pricing arrangement for the Games on Demand service, though it would be foolish to do so. You and I are both fully aware that this is just the first piece of a new digital distribution puzzle for the console manufacturer, and one that’s very likely to receive a lot of attention from both the media and consumers. It’s the fact that Microsoft have decided to do as Electronic Theatre initially suggested, and that’s release these games at around the same price as their high street retail Recommended Retail Price (RRP).

I was agast when I saw that Oblivion was $49.95, when I could go to Gamestop and get the GotY version (has both DLC content included) for $30.

    Its bullshit.

Its not paying for convenience so much as getting ripped off

With my 20Gig hard drive though, even if they were a decent enough price I wouldn't be able to buy any as I don't have the space after the few gigs of Rock Band songs. I can maybe see the appeal for Xbox Originals (even though they've been around for a while) as they may be harder to find, but these games are easily found much cheaper than they cost digitally.

I can't see many people buying the games unless you get better deals, such as the game download coming with free DLC.

English Price for all games (from Meet the Robinsons to Oblivion) - £19.99.

How much I bought Mass Effect for last week in HMV - £9.98.

Kind of puts it in perspective.

here in the states the prices are just too high. COD 2 is $29.99usd! are u kidding me? gamestop is selling the game for $12.99 used. if M$ was selling the game for $15usd on the games on demand channel then that would of been a good deal. the notion of us paying a higher price for convenience is just stupid. if anything the prices should be lower because we do not get the physical disc. if the prices were reasonable then the digital distribution of games on the 360 would take off but this is just taking 2 steps back.

Forget GameStop. I want to see these prices drop below Amazon! Man, have you guys see the Australian prices for Games on Demand? Now there's a ripoff.

MS needs to look at what the general street value is for a used copy and work from there, have $10, $20, $30, etc price points relative to what they are selling for used, and only have $60 on the new games that have been out for 3 months or less.

all of the games are like £10 pre-owned anywhere. £20 is a huge ripoff for almost any of them.
