A lot of gamers were disappointed when backwards compatibility was pulled from the PS3. When the PS3 initially launched it had a much smaller library than the Xbox 360 library, which had a one year head start, and backwards compatibility was a good way to ease people into buying a PS3. When you bought a PS3, you still had a lot of great PS2 titles that you could play, but once that was no longer an option, people found it hard to justify the $600 price tag. Now, the PS3 is almost three years into its life cycle, and has a very strong game library. In addition, the PS3 is $200 cheaper then it was at launch. Is backwards compatibility still needed when the PS3 has such a strong library?

As the PlayStation 3 enters its 3rd year in its lifecycle rumors are abound of a firmware update bringing back backwards compatability. But do we really need it at this point?

Don’t get me wrong, the more features the better…

The more available options, the better the perceived value of a product. So when Sony dropped the support of backwards compatibility early on in the PS3’s life, gamers were very upset, and rightfully so.

Backwards compatibility helps ease the transition into a new console. It helped the jump from the original PlayStation to the PS2, since you could still play your existing game library. And having PS2 support in launch PS3s was a major selling point. But the PS3 launch is LONG gone.

Apparently nobody in web journalism has ever heard of the word "preference."

Of course it is not needed but it is a nice touch and I love the fact that my 60GB version has it.

Ditto. I can hang up the PS2 due to backwards compatibility.

I love shoving it in my cousin's face that I can play PS2 games on my 60gig model and he can't. Wait till he hears I upgraded to 320gigs.

I need backwards compatability, I can't play War of the Monsters without a PS2

Hah, I remember that game. Was it the one where you battle it out in a HUGE stage? Great game.

I like the BC.For the last 3 or 4 days I have been playing Dragon Quest 8 on my PS3.I still have my PS2 but I prefer to play my PS1/2 games on my PS3.I only playing PS2 on my PS2 if they don't work on my PS3.

I would love to have a BC PS3. I still play my PS2 all the time (and I still have PS2 games that I bought but haven't played yet and some more I want to buy), but it's one of the old bulky launch ones and it's just now starting to die on me. It would be so much easier for me to just buy a PS3 that has BC instead of buying a new PS2 and a PS3.

A majority of the gaming I have ever done on my PS3 are pS2 games, so yes, it's needed to me.

I think it's only a matter of time before PS2 games are put on PSN, so no.

Seriously? You'd rather just buy PS2 games that you already own, again? Obvious fail.
Personally I hate not being able to go back and play my PS2 games in my PS3. I'm too lazy to plug the red, white, and yellow cables back into my T.V. and clean off the controller. I wish I had a 60 gb model...

K, sir, did I say I had a PS2? Did I make any mention of myself having a PS2? No.

For people who don't have PS2's, it would be an obvious choice. Think again, and use your head before you say someone is an 'obvious fail'.

That should be an option, not a forced decision. Many people who have a PS3 have or had a PS2, myself included. I wasn't lucky enough to get BC either. I've got a number of PS2 games I still enjoy playing and I hate being stuck swapping between consoles.

Evidently pooOBKp did kind of jump on an assumption there that turned out to be false. Still, he has a point, putting the games on PSN is no solution for everyone as that just means some people have to buy them again, which is down right stupid when you own the disk and your holding it in your hand.

Personally I'd rather just see what Microsoft did and release a BC patch for people who want it, a free patch. Even if they only patch a handful of games at a time, it would still be a lot better than no BC at all, especially when we know it can easily be done.

You would prefer spending inflated prices on games from the PSN then a backwards compatability option, where you could get about 5 games for a £10.

          Great logic.

...What crappy games are you buying that are that cheap? Many of the games on PSN are cheaper than you'd find in disc form because most of the games are rare and/or highly sought after.

I've never seen it as a big deal, I sold pretty much all my PS2 games anyway.

I'd say it is needed, it's one of the reasons I'm holding out for the PS3 slim. Backwards compatability allows me to play classics that I've enjoyed before, without the trouble of having to buy a PS2 again.

I haven't touched my 360 at all this summer...all I've played was PS3. Why? Because I've been playing my old PS2 and PS1 games on it. The 60GB model sure is nice.
