Resident Evil 5 recieved mixed reviews and left many gamers feeling disappointed at the direction the series has headed in. And yet it was very successful, becoming the best-selling Resident Evil game within the span of a few weeks. But was marketing the key to Resident Evil 5's success? Go to the source to find out why Electronic Entertainment Design and Research thinks so...

Electronic Entertainment Design and Research, an interactive entertainment research firm, says that the success of Capcom’s Resident Evil 5 can be attributed to the marketing strategies behind its release in March.

EEDAR’s most recent report showed that the survival-horror shooter was one of the few new titles to break into the top 10 selling games this year through June, selling nearly two million copies in the U.S. and five million worldwide.

Besides Resident Evil 5 being a high-quality, widely acclaimed title (it received a Metacritic score of 85 for the Xbox 360 version), EEDAR executive chairman Greg Short told IndustryGamers.com that a good-sized marketing budget and a strong marketing team helped the title greatly.

I hated all of the adverts and marketing of Resident Evil 5. I actually really enjoyed playing it and thought that it was a great game but it probably sold as well as it did because of the title Resident Evil rather than the way it was marketed.

I think it was because it appealed to the masses. Everyone likes a good action game. Whether it be Resident Evil or Gears of War, people enjoy this stuff. Not everyone likes survival horror. So in a way it brought people out of the woodworks to give this survival horror turned action game.

im sorry to say but this game is not survival horror. This is a typical survival game the horror was striped out. Good game non the less.

Agreed. That with the amount of hype Capcom has been building up, the whole "climatic" end with Albert Wesker and Chris Redfield, the rumors of Jill Valentine and Sherry Birking flying from all corners then the advertisement.

TBH it was a below average game that just rode the hype train all the way. Much like the "Snakes on a Plane" movie.

I'm sure SE5 was great. But this is RE5.

Also whats with the "fear" we can't forget- tagline? Emphasis on FEAR. Capcom can't honestly still think this game is horror?

They obviously do if they gave it that tagline.
Which kinda sucks because, with the horror-themes trailers that were released early on and the "fear you can't forget" tagline, I imagine alot of gamers would have bought it thinking it would be a horror.

I enjoyed the game, but that thought occurred to me as well. Wasn't scary at all.

I don't think Resident Evil 5 is the best selling game in the series due to hype, but it was a bit TOO similar to RE4.

marketing didnt have much to do with it. just ppl seeing screen shots and videos of it and going "damn, a new RE game and it looks AWESOME".

i had a great time with it. you wouldnt think it would have good replay value, but due to going through different difficulties with all the kick ass weapons you unlocked before, it sorta does give it replay. im going through Veteran with infinite RPG, M29, Jail Breaker and Sig 556 (plus the unique weapons which i dont use) and still having fun, and i plan to play through Pro with a friend after that.

I think Resident Evil 1-4 was the key to Resident Evil 5's success.
