Elder-Geek writes a very good article about unused game environments. We have seen countless environment themes in video games and some are getting over used. Video games should start creating new environments that hardly have been used.

Let’s face it. Some game settings are shamelessly overused. Among them we have jungles, the Middle East, New York City, feudal Japan, high fantasy, World War II, outer space, and high technology science fiction. Within these you also have the cliché snow, fire and water themed levels, mix in military bases and abandoned villages/labs and you have yourself just about every game ever made. There are exceptions to this of course (hence the “just about”), but we’re not going to delve too much on those —the world is full of exceptions and if you’re going to factor in all of them you’ll never get to the point.

IMO, as long as the environments does it's job and looks decent, I don't really care where it takes place. In fact, I like NYC levels . It's the water levels I cannot stand.

I think Shadow Complex has the environments off to a tee. Lots of different, vibrant, dark places on that game.

Is this really an issue....? it's not like every game has the same story or controls or something. I mean I've never really thought about games like this. The environment may be of the same element, but they don't exactly look the same. IMO this article is ridiculous.

It depends on people preferences. I mean I sometimes get annoyed with things sometimes looking the same as another game. Or at least some what similar. But I think video games have done every environment that can appeal to at least every person.

We need more levels that take place at the center of the earth and on the surface of the sun. It would be interesting to see what imagination game designers would use.

I like the current environments already in games but a little diversity would do some good.
