Gaming Target's Troy Matsumiya takes a good hard look at District 9 and realizes that it proves Neill Blomkamp would have had the chops to make an amazing Halo movie.

I couldn’t help but feel the same pain as I watched District 9, the debut feature film from director Neill Blomkamp – yup, the same Neill Blomkamp chosen to direct the defunct Halo movie. I’m not going to do an in-depth review of District 9 here but suffice to say, go see it. It’s a great movie: funny, exciting, emotional, raw, well acted and smartly written. The gritty handheld documentary style works perfectly and really gives you the sense that you’re watching something real (Battlestar Galactica fans know what I mean). And like Battlestar Galactica, District 9 is science fiction for grown-ups – unlike the recent rash of adolescent popcorn flicks that are full of flashy CGI and little else (*cough* Transformers *cough* G.I. Joe).

Did anyone else notice the Zero Point Energy Field Manipulator thing ala Half-Life 2?

Also the Prawns looked somewhat like the Vorts.

    Just a thought...

While there may have been subtle references to the Halo-film-that-wasn't, District 9 is based off a short film Blomkamp did years ago. The lore, story and (mostly) the characters are drawn from that original short film and are in no way related to Halo.

So you did. Woops. Point still stands though. The short film was pre-Half Life 2 and that's what the film is based off.

Yeah there was definitely a lot of subtle homages to other genre stuff. Loved it though, I hope FOX execs just kicked their own collective asses after watching it and realizing they ruined Bloomkamp doing HALO.

i think the only part that could have been a halo movie was the second half of the movie, the action portion of it. this movie was really a tale of two halfs, the first half being a very good plot driven movie the second being a simple buddy action flick. if i want to watch a halo movie i want less plot and more action cause that's what makes it exciting.

I'm glad dude made District 9 instead of a Halo movie. The games are fun but I really don't think they have all that much in the way of story going for them beyond really common science fiction cliches.

Not many Alien movies are driven behind a religious crusade. In that sense Halo is somewhat original.

Personally this was a good move on Neill Blomkamp's part as really doing a game to move adaptation on your first effort. He could have killed his career from the get go, now he has one movie under his belt one that is very good. He can now do what he wants with less scrutiny perhaps now Halo may be made.

There will probably be a Halo movie, and like all game-movies it has a high chance of getting panned, but it will not be Blomkamp doing it. He came out and said in person that someone will make a good halo movie someday, but it definetly won't be him as he can't see past the main character as anything more than a glorified supporting character member. His idea would of had the movie from everyone else's perspective as Master Chief went about his missions or, also said, he would have competely re-invented the Master Chief. Either path would have had fans in an uproar. Not much Chief in one option, and no chief in the second. :S

Its like the MGS movie; you want to make it, it can be made, but nobody has a clue who or how it should be done.

Not even Hideo Kojima could help the director out with an MGS movie. The lineage confuses him enough.

Anyone can be Master Chief the guy never shows his face. Master Chief could be played by a woman in a movie as all you need is a body inside the bulky armour.
