Very few companies have ever been a threat to Nintendo when it comes to the handheld market. Ever since the original Gameboy many have tried to compete against the Big N only to fail miserably, however now some say the iPhone is going to be the next challenger to Nintendo, and it actually has a shot at going toe to toe with the gaming giant.

Wasn't this a big story... a year ago?

      Probably.

And the answer is still a big fat
      NO.

Depends on your definition of big. And story.

The iPhone is miles off even affecting the sales for either of the portable consoles, let alone actually been considered a 'threat'.

Actually I am pretty sure the Iphone at least took some sales from PSP and DS.

the psp was never a thread to the ds. it still isn't.

likewise, the ds is no threat to the psp. the audience for the psp is there, it's just smaller. the iphone is in the DS' territory of casual games.

The differance been the iPhone isn't going to sell to kids. The DS also has the ability of targeting the 'Core' market which I highly doubt the iPhone will.
Aside from that though I was under the impression that most of the iPhones sales weren't coming from people intending to use it as a gaming device.

I remember what's-his-face-Apple-dude-that-isn't-Steve-Jobs was speaking at that Apple event last year, and he stated that the iPhone is the new portable gaming machine. I *bleep*ing lol'd until it hurt.

It was a new portable gaming machine -- big difference.

He said it as an implication that it would destroy the DS and PSP. Oh well, I'd never transfer to AT&T, nor would I get an iPhone.

Speaking of which, I'm currently in Taiwan -- where many iPhones go to get "unlocked"...

Not really sure how 'laughable' that really is unless you know the scene. I myself have actually bought more games on my iPhone in the past three months than I have for both my DS and PSP combined within the last three years.

My friends who also have iPhones as well as both portables can most likely say the same thing. I don't even know when the last time they bought a DS or PSP game but they always have some new game for their phone.

Games being offered for as low as $0.99 (not counting free games) are much more tempting than picking up a single game for $29+ the most expensive games I've seen thus far would be about $10. The Wolfenstein RPG app is only $2.99. Every game is on a single device where as with either the PSP or DS you have to carry around multiple games. Granted, there are definitely higher quality games for the PSP/DS (ie: Scribblenauts, yaaay).

The iPhone is by no means a DS/PSP killer at the moment but it has its benefits and shouldn't be discounted as a portable gaming device.

I was thinking about that. It's cheap, easily accessible, and its target audience is pretty *bleep*ing wide. I was pretty skeptical at first, but now people are ridiculously addicted to these online applications, and if they waste money on useless ones (fart noise apps = wtf?), I can't imagine how much they're willing to spend on games.

it's actually a huge threat to PSP, hence PSP Go and all these talks about PSP phone.

not a threat to Nintendo though. DS is actually a very well made handheld.

A huge threat? Tell that to Japan.
