Can Nintendo stay competitive with Sony and Microsoft offering more functionality for nearly the same cost or does Nintendo need to drop the price of the Wii to stay competitive?

There's no reason the PS3 and 360 should be in the same pricing range as Wii.

Nintendo won't drop the cost while the thing is still selling. At the end of it all the Wii probably only costs like $40 to product and they sell for like $249 or something. Huge profit they won't drop the price with such profits until it really shows signs of slowing.

I agree that profit margins are ridiculous, but including overheads and shipping the net cost for 1 unit will probably end up around $200. $50 is still a hefty profit margin, and that's plenty of space for adjustment when you consider the amount being sold. The average uninformed customer is probably going to pick, or get upsold/haggled to the Xbox360 or PS3 over the Wii, so I don't think Nintendo has much of a choice if they want to remain competitive.

I think this is almost more of a subtle belittling of the Wii article. Why not have the Wii cost the same? People see the Wii as lesser of a console just because of the games or hardware that isn't as technological as the other two, or just because plain don't like it.

You know what? There are many people out there who actually LOVE the Wii and see it as equal or preferred to the PS3 and 360! Not due to price or anything either, but just because they like it and its games.

So let the Wii remain whatever price it will be, and sure, fine, let it have a price cut. But NOT simply for the fact that the other two consoles are getting within its range.

I don't know, I'm probably reading too much into it, but it just feels a tad like its subtly saying the Wii is just a toy and not worthy to be in the same league (price-wise) as the others.

I'm no fan of the Wii really myself (I want to get one eventually though, for the few great gems it has), but dang it, the price is ridiculous compared to what it costs to make, compared to the other consoles.

Sure, Nintendo is of the habit to be the only one (at first that is) to sell their consoles for a profit, but that turns off people like me, that are sorta on the fence about getting one.

Business wise, their strategy makes sense, but it is at the same time, annoying ~_~

Now see, that's a good reason to drop the price. I don't know how much it takes to make one or anything, so I can't say too much.

So, sure, drop the price for the customers, but again, not just because the other two are getting too close to it's price. When saying it that way, makes it sound belittling to it.

BTW, TT, Hope you enjoy the Wii if/when you get it. I have one and it's pretty fun sometimes. Though I don't get time to play it as often as the others. Most of the games I have for it are multiplayer games

Nintendo probably will give it a price cut once the sales slow a bit. I know plenty of people intending to get a Wii if they can them cheap, I imagine Ninty's holding out until they've gotten the most money they can out of the current price.

The writer of the article misunderstands several things, in my opinion.

A.) Price is not determined by the Internet console war, but by supply and demand. Wii prices will drop when demand drops, which obviously hasn't happened yet.

B.) People buying Wiis aren't buying them because the other consoles are expensive, they are buying them because they want a Wii. The people buying Wiis are either younger kids getting first consoles for birthdays, casuals to finally plug into hype, and gamers who want a secondary/tertiary console to their others. Most people who planned on buying the Wii as their primary console did so years ago, just like with the other systems. The Wii offers a completely different set of games to the other consoles, who have pretty much the same lineup save a few exclusives.

C.) Once again, the number of videophile tech geeks that the raw horsepower of the consoles matter to are a very small but vocal section of the market, and have probably bought the systems they want by now anyway.

The Wii should cost less to buy than X-Box & PS3. It is not really in the same class as the other two, nor as expensive to produce. It is a fancy external drive in my opinion. It is functional, but very limited as far as hard core gamers go. It is more like an electronic board game. You use it every once and a while with friends, but mainly it just sits around collecting dust, especially if you own an X-Box or PS3.
In the end consumer demand is king in the game of capitalism.

The Wii is only priced so high because it's so popular with families. Nintendo know that if a family wants a console, they'll get a Wii. They also know that if a hardcore gamer wants one, they'll be prepared to pay the price for it.

Wii consoles sell like hotcakes. If I sold a product, I wouldn't want to reduce the price if everyone was clearing it off the shelves at top speed.
