Batman: Arkham Asylum looks like it will be a sales success, so we'll probably see a sequel sometime in future. Go to the source for IGN's ideas for a sequel. What would you like to see?

The hallmark of any excellent videogame is that even if you beat it, you don't stop thinking about it. You want more. That's certainly proven true of Batman: Arkham Asylum. IGN's comics team, being avid gamers themselves, have been imagining scenarios and villains that would make excellent backdrops and participants in a follow-up to Rocksteady's recent release.

True to their wild imaginations, the team managed to conjure up a storyline and list of villains that would actually span two games. They've separated the concepts by game, listing off a brief introduction to each title, the major villains involved and a quick rundown of the major story beats. In a sense you'll be reading a fairly detailed pitch for two major Batman videogames.

Once you're done, we want to hear from you. What kinds of stories would you want to see from an "Arkham Asylum 2"? Would you want the game to reach into Gotham? What villains do you want to see? Should any return? Let us know in the comments thread below!

it sounded great up until the 3rd game. going back to Arkham again? eh, i dont know.

I'm the opposite. I think the second would be not so great. That's mostly because they keep referencing Crackdown and doing it kinda like that and all that stuff. I'm "iffy" on that because I don't want them doing things the same way another game did things. B:AA was almost unique. It combined several "similarities" like the stealth, but . . .

I don't know, I'm just mighty relunctant on their constant referral to Crackdown. And I think it'd be quite interesting to see him back at Arkham . . . this time being locked up and all. It's not like he can just beat his way out and defy all the authorities and all that. If he did that, he'd be breaking that trust that the police have with him and they'd end up trying to lock him back up again. Instead he'd have to figure a way out, AND show he shouldn't be in there because it was a plot by Hush, all ASAP.

All in all though, I'm wary of fan-based stories. They usually sound great in theory but end up poor when put to the test. I'd just have to trust that the devs who made a great story for this one, will make an equally great (or better) story for the next.

The only thing I want for a sequel is for it to be set in Gotham city. That would be AWESOME.

Oh, and I'd love to see villains we did't see in the original. Two-Face, Catwoman, Penguin, etc.

Hm, to make it in Gotham would surely be epic, but it would have to be a more sandbox style of gameplay. I mean, making it the entire city would mean that we'd need access to Batman's rides and such.

Would love to see Catwoman and Freeze though.

Nah, only make certain sections of Gotham available and get in between said sections with a batmobile cutscene or mini-game. Making it completely sandbox would mess it up imo, since we'd all just be running around the rooftops like spastics. Don't get me wrong it'll be fun as hell but it'll kinda ruin the ambience

    I think they're overlooking something though (there will be spoilers from the first game, so unless you've done the spirit of Amadeus or completed the game just don't read anything, but they aren't that big overall just don't be bitches if you do read and then have anything spoiled);

They forget about Warden Quincy Sharp, the spirit of Amadeus Arkham. He, like Amadeus, has gone pretty much batshit insane (no pun intended) and is obsessed with curing (read: killing) patients for the sake of not letting anymore people fall victim to them. And now half of them are scattered around Gotham. So Quincy Sharp himself is a useless tub of shit, but he has a crapload of money and the resources of Arkham Asylum at his fingertips (or at least, everyone aside from Bats think he has them anyway, since if he was to show up anywhere the B-man would kick the crap out of him, obviously). So with Two-Face evading capture after the bank robbery mentioned at the end you've got him, Penguin, Black Mask (like mentioned there) and another villain (I'm thinking Mad Hatter or Maxie Zeus to act as the 'Zsasz of the game') battling over the city as usual with their respective gangs. Only Warden Sharp is on their respective asses. He's enlisted the help of Ra's al Ghul (whose body he took from Arkham and helped get to a Lazarus pit) and the league of assassins, promising he'll be allowed to kill each and every villain, and acting as Sharp's right hand man is none other than Mr. Freeze who either (depending on the timeline it's set) has been promised that his wife can be saved using newly discovered technology or has been promised a one on one with Batman (the person he ultimately blames for his wife's death) and he helps because getting rid of the crime bosses would make that time come faster. So not only is Batman trying to get them back to Arkham but he's also trying to make sure they aren't killed before then. Alfred will be the contact like Oracle was and Wayne Manor/the Batcave is like a mission hub style place. Also I'm thinking a scene where you fall into Solomon Grundy's lair whilst trying to chase someone/follow clues. You mess up your leg on the fall and have to escape whilst limping whilst Grundy closes in on you, though that may be taking it even further than too far XD

It's very much over the top comic-y bullshit compared to B:AA, but it could work And, since you're around Gotham and Blackgate got emptied out too, they could have a Riddler-like mechanic where you're looking for stolen things based on clues Catwoman accidentally left around the city (...or, was it accidentally? )

It sounds good but too much is going on. Freeze is still locked up at AA, and after the joker incedent im sure they would not let hime escape. I like the mad hatter idea, he would bring the bazzar to the next game. The thought of the next game being in Gotham is terrifying, that would most def. ruin the atmosphere the first one set. Batman on the hunt for sharp could set the scene for the game, but dont base the game on it. Hsve batman find him early in the game and follow clues and riddles and traps to his killer for the rest of the game.

Sharp (or the League of Assassins) managed to get out Ra's Al Ghul's body easily enough. He is the warden, afterall, so he could get Freeze out without batting an eyelid.

I don't see how it being set in Gotham would ruin it, so long as it's done right. Gotham is, afterall, a wretched hive of scum and villainy a place filled with crime, insanity and darkness; the only thing darker than the Asylum is the city itself, especially with the villains running around.

Obviously Sharp wouldn't be a massive part of the game; the two main enemies would be Freeze and Ra's Al Ghul, Sharp would just be thinking he's in charge behind the scenes since without him it woudln't work.

yes but we dont know where sharp went when he flead, and knowing batman he probally let gordon in on the down low so sharp is now wanted for questioning so he won't make any appearances to arkham. Ra's al ghul would be great but it is still too early for him, they need to establish more story and involve him later on. Gotham would be a good set but I just dont want it becomming GTA, they need to take small steps here and one location spread is good for now, blackgate sounds good because the campus is huge just like arkham and the story is not only easier to create but it has the potential to be as good as B:AA.

I'm extremely surprised IGN gave this game such a high rating. IGN is the pickiest set of reviewers. Period. I hate IGN to be honest, so I don't care what they think.

What could be great is something like the Spiderman and Assassin's Creed game. I mean to have a free mode and to be able to drive the batmobile, run and fly around the rooftops of Gotham, saving people in dark streets, etc. I know lot of people doesn't like this idea but with a free mode, everyone would be satisfied.

But of course, the most important is a new story with most wanted vilians who escaped from the asylum and that we haven't seen in the prequel such as Freeze, Penguin, Clayface, Two-Face and of course, KILLER-CROC! More Riddler's enigmas but this time, linked with the story and presented such as puzzles and mini-games.

Also, just an idea, a little help from a "darker" Catwoman or Nightwing could be nice sometimes in the game!

For the story... My first idea was to play what happened before the beginning of the first BAA! How Batman catch the Joker.

    Or

The story begins right after the end of the first game. Bruce returns to his manor in his batwing and encounters Oracle who leaves to see his father. Bruce takes a damn good shower and shave
Meanwhile, Killer Croc goes to a sewers base where the arkham escapees are waiting for him. They learn that Joker failed so Croc becomes the leader. Together they continue the Titan Project. With the help of Freeze who is a scientist, they do some experimentations on Man-Bat, Solomon Grundy and/or Clayface. Penguin (who's running his lounge), Two-Faces and Black Mask finance the project... Hush could also be part of the team.

Well I think that all what I had to say! Thx for listening

Not to poke holes in a fellow nerds theories but having the game focus on how Batman caught the Joker beforehand would be pointless, since he did say 'He gave up almost without a fight. I don't like it.' Meaning it would amount to going to where Joker was, having a little scuffle, game over.

As for the second idea I don't think anyone in their right mind would ever consider letting Killer Croc become the leader of a Titan project. It could work if it was Bane or someone, but Croc's just a moron and that's putting it nicely

I agree, they should lose focus on arkham island and focus on something else. Or rather somewhere else. This reminds me of resident evil, do you remember when the first one came out? I never expected it to go further than it did and look at it now, there are 8 of them and the story is eligantly woven between all of them. I can see the new founded batman being that way. This is just the begining of the story, Gotham is a huge city with a long past that can be summed up in a few video games.

That sounds too much like GTA, you cant set an atmosphere for a game then change it the next one, did you ever play GTA? You get through 1/2 the game and get board of following the gamepaly so you just go around killing people.

There is too much to do in that game so poeple get board and put it down. That would not only ruin the next batman but it would ruin AA as well. And Croc being a mastermind is as horrible as introducing robin ( no offense). On that note why would 2 face and the penguin and croc and black mask care that joker failed? It's not like they are best friends and they want to seek revenge, and the titan project was jokers and only jokers. why do you think he had a party list? He could have had mr. freeze make it and avoid paying dr. young but he didnt let them in on it. As far as they know joker was just being joker. again no offense Im not trying to beat you down here.

Catwoman would be a great addition to the game but not as a mastermind, she is a theif hired by the joker time to time merely for a distraction with her flitatious charm on batman. I think the only solid way to go is scarecrow being the mastermind and have other villians in on alterier motives or are there by chance.

All I want to see is catwoman as an ally, like she has been since after no man's land. The combat in Arkham Asylum, particularly the Joker's acrobatic fighting techniques are the sort of thing I'd like to see in action with Catwoman.

That said, the two storylines presented are too much story, not enough game.
Half the appeal of Arkham Asylum was wondering which villains you'd meet, and which you wouldn't. If you start whipping out Two face and the penguin as minor characters, there's a huge potential for camp, or wasted potential (both are bad).

Likewise, you can't have too much of the batman family appear in a game. Once you introduce more than batman, you have to wonder where the game fits in continuity. you show a robin, then which robin is it? Is there a batgirl? Which batgirl? Is Nightwing there? And, I would hope that the answer to all of those questions is "no, and none of them"

Likewise, introducing wayne manor, or ANY daytime scenes will effectively destroy the atmosphere of dark predator etc.

Personally, I'd like to see the riddler take a more prominent role, and avoid using the villains who are all beefed up and mindless, since they can't add to a plot in any capacity but as someone else's pawn.

I fully support the idea of a sequel, only if Rocksteady and Edios is responsible about it. What I mean is they can't make an Arkham Asylum encore they have to use new ideas but with the same wickedly attraction they had with AA. The Scarecrow parts were some of the best things I have ever seen come out of a video game so in that sense I would love to see more Scarecrow in the next one.

WHAT EVER THEY DO THEY CAN NOT ADD ROBIN!!! he will ruin the game, this batman sits apart from the other batman games, like the new batman movies sit apart from the old ones. Maybe make robin an unlockable co-op character (co-op only, no .a.i.) and in that case make the next one co-op.

As for location, Arkham is out, but Black Gate is not. Blackgate wouldn't be a bad choice of location and it give a chance for the people who don't read the comics to learn about it. The villains are probably going to make the game so they have to be very careful on who they pick, some are total flops (the rat catcher, Humpty Dumpty, ect.) Mad Hatter wouldn't be a bad pick, Scarecrow and mad hatter, not a bad combo lots of messed up stuff, the imagination is virtually free to do anything. The Joker can not be in this one, nor poison ivy. Clayface would be good but try making a story on how he got out of AA might be tricky.

Now for the most important thing, gameplay changes. 1. The villians were too easy in AA, make them a little bit more challenging. 2. The game I gave an A+, but the graphics I gave a B. They werent choppy but there was some bleeding like when you face the scarecrow for the first time and you open the bodybag with your mother, her teeth were bleeding in with her lips. Gears of war graphics would bring the potential of this game out 100%. 3. The batclaw was great in this game, but it wasn't used up to it's potential. If I can tear down walls with it why cant I grab an enemy from a distance and pull him over to me and string him up? At least make it an upgrade or an unlockable.

Now for things that should be carried over. The riddler challenges were amazing with the question marks you had to line up and ect. They would be perfect for the next game, and I got a good story for haw he got to blackgate in the first place, because arkham was shut down at the end of the game when they caught the riddler, they were forced to bring him to blackgate for the time being. The detective mode was also a unique aspect to this batman, I would keep it. The arkham chronicles were also good. and the mystery at the end was an unexpected treat. So do something like that but make it like prisoners chronicles and if completed you get the history of blackgate. As for the thugs someone said that they should have a more prominent role, but the truth is they are just thugs, not masterminds all they will ever be are pawns, but i do agree to a point that they should have more of an a.i like be able to flank you, or set up traps ect.

Killer croc was just an eighties cliche and should have never made it in this game and should not be in the next one. He was useless, all you had to do was throw baterangs at him an run, not too challenging. And the Joker was a little bit of a let down at the end. His men are the ones that killed me not him, come to think of it he never laid a hand on me. Mr. freeze should be out of it because the last we saw he was locked up tight aT AA. but two face and penguin were nowhere in sight. All I know is that this game will be hard to compete with, maybe batman is taking a turn for the better and getting away from children's play thing and going towards an more adult theme aspect. The darker side of batman and Gotham city is comming out. I thought that a sequel to batman begins would not compete with it but it surpassed my expectations and I think everyones expectations, so maybe the next game will do the same. Don't forget that this amazing game was made by people it did not just appear, they came up with all of the ideas and all the ways to break the molds of batman. Im sure they have the next game already figured out and it will meet our now higher expectations. Oh and one more thing, NO BATDOG!!!!

Ignoring the fact that Mark Hamill doesn't want to do the Joker's voice again, I wouldn't mind seeing the Joker again, if only because he's Batman's main adversary. Depending on how much time has passed between Arkham Asylum and the sequel (or even whether the next game will be a sequel at all) I wouldn't be surprised if we see him again, with a new and even better plan.

But would a re-appearance from Ivy and Harley really add anything new to a sequel? There are so many great Batman villains that weren't in Arkham Asylum who could be used for a sequel instead, tbh.

          Catwoman. There. One.

Who cares about how many are women? If people complain about it and rocksteady care then they can just have a side-plot with Batgirl and Huntress sorting out the rest of the city. It would be incredibly stupid in my opinion for them to re-use characters for the sole purpose of not offending over-sensitive people.

        jimmystick27 Oct 2, 09
true, but last time arkham has never gotten taken over before, joker escaped many times along with other villians, but harley? Shes not exactly smart, she got out because joker wanted her out mearly as a distraction for batman. trust me, shes not going anywhere. neither is ivy, she needed harley to get her out. And need I say, joker is still recovering from the vaxcine batman gave him. rocksteady made that clear when they showed you.

The fact that croc did not get locked back up tells me that he might be in the sequel which scares me because I hate croc, and scraecrow will def. be in the next one. Joker and co. will not, nor will ivy, maybe baine because he was not cought either.
Dent and copplepot are still out there and the riddler is effie. maybe if they do a setting at blackgate which is now occuring to me that they probally wont because of the fire that forced them to transfer jokers guy over in the first place.

And besides even if harley and ivy got out what kind of game would that be? And one more thing, harley wont leave joker behind, so joker will probally be in the next one as well. I hope they do not sink low enough to cycle characters, batman has so many villians that were never in the spotlight execpt for the comics. What makes me think they will use the more obscure villians is the fact that they brought in killer croc.
        • 0
          Miss Razz Oct 4, 09
Actually, if Harley escaped with Ivy, she probably would leave the Joker behind. Harley's at her least needy when she's around Ivy.

I don't see what's wrong with recycling characters. This is the Batman frachise, after all. It's a never-ending cycle of Batman trying to defeat the same bad guys over and over again. They just need to keep the villains' motives fresh and interesting.
But with characters like Ivy and Harley... well, their motives are kinda one-dimensional. I don't think they're varied enough to make a re-appearance fresh and interesting.

Come on guys, seriously? See her boobs, it's a game. We're not in high school anymore, getting off from a pair of computer generated boobs is a little weird. If thats your thing than whatever, but there are better ways of seeing fake boobs than waiting for a game.
