It probably shouldn't come as a surprise that every game with high praise eventually brings out the "is this game overrated?" topics. This time it's Batman: Arkham Asylum's turn, with Gamingvice.net asking whether the game really deserves the high praise it has recieved...

Batman: Arkham Asylum’s score in the upper 90% from many reviewers, implies that it is of the calibre of such titles as Metal Gear Solid, Gears of War, Mario Galaxy and Resident Evil.

BAA is a very good game, a game that any Batman fan will be happy with. Unfortunately such review score systems bring with them the misunderstanding that all gamers need to play this game. People with little interest in The Dark Knight universe may find themselves baffled at how this game could find itself in the company of Half-Life and Grand Theft Auto.

      Exactly.

Whoever thinks this game is overrated needs to be quietly taken to a dark alley in Mexico City and beaten senselessly.

It's probably overrated, as there aren't many people jumping on the "overrated" bandwagon yet and everyone gets their panties in a bunch when they think about the notion that anyone would even consider calling it overrated in a million years.

I think it is to be honest. Especially with such a crappy preorder gift.

my preorder gift was an awesome Joker t-shirt, and apart from it being way too big for me, i would have kept it for sure.

        What about those plastic batarangs?
        • 1
          Shinobi_razor Sep 6, 09
that was what came in the collector's edition. that had nothing to do with the pre order gift. and yes, that was crappy.

      RabidChinaGirl Sep 6, 09
Hm, my pre-order gift was an awesome prequel comic book where Batman punches Joker in the face.

Plastic Batarang was a Collector's Edition item, not pre-order. Given everything Rocksteady put into this game, down to the random Arkham website and toll free interactive telephone number they put in, I can't call this game overrated. Maybe gamers just don't know a good thing when they see it.

If you've played the game, then no. If you haven't and aren't going to, I'd say probabaly.

So because a game is being praised after which most games before it (superhero games) usually fails it's automatically deemed overrated?

Granted there are people who haven't played this game that says it's the best ever but that's the minority. Why can't good games be just good rather than overrated?

    Fury* Sep 5, 09
I don't know if I would call it overrated, but I think it's definitely getting more attention simply because of the recent successful releases of Christopher Nolan's Batman movies. If it wasn't Batman, would it be nearly as popular? What if it was a squirrel dropkicking birds from tree branches (instead of Batman dropkicking henchmen from Gargoyles)? The gameplay would be technically the same, but I'm sure most people would put it off as a silly and unwanted game. Of course, I know there's more to the game than that, but I'm just saying.

I can see where your going with this but I cant say that I agree, there are so many aspects about this game that people love that weren't in the movies, these guys just hit batman gold plain and simple. They knew what the batman geeks wanted and cleverly weaved it in with the regular stuff for the everyday gamer. I mean just look the x-men movies were blockbuster hits but the games didn't do much justice. It's BATMAN, everybody loves batman, he's been around longer than spiderman and x-men, your parents liked him when they were young. There is just something about a plain guy who is super in every way but super.

    HisServant77 Sep 5, 09
Ha, definitely not. It's a great game I think the only ones who don't like it, are those who don't care too much for Batman, or haven't played the game. Oh, and those who don't like the action/adventure type of games. But that's personal preference, not a matter of overrated or not.

Jelousy, is the main motive to call this over rated, they were jelous that halo lost the spotlight.

Star of Spurs Sep 5, 09
    No.

It's a game that mixes stealth and action perfectly, has a great storyline and voice cast and makes you feel like Batman. It's a game that actually requires some thinking to get passed certain, which doesn't happen enough in gaming. It's definatly not a game for the Call of Duty and Halo demographic - most of the time, running in as fast as you can will get you killed. I'm pretty sure they would be the only ones to not like this brilliant game.

I really could not have said it better, the voice cast were amazing, and the halo guys would hate this game, thats partly why it's called overrated because there are not puzzles in halo just kill. They wont know how to ambush or silently takedown anybody let alone solve the puzzles. B:AA #1 comic based game I have ever played.

its definitely the best superhero action game ever made, and maybe even the best superhero game period, although im really fond of Marvel Ultimate Alliance and have high hopes for the sequel.

its the best DC superhero game ever, at least.

If someone played through the game, and doesn't believe that the game deserves the praise it gets and justifies their opinion with sound reasons then thats something I believe should be respected even if you disagree with it.

It's great. Then you beat it. Then you're bored. Then you want your money back.

      Gamesta100* Sep 5, 09
Do you just mean beat the story?

I don't usually bother with finishing games 100%, usually finishing the story then stopping. But I am thoroughly enjoying trying for 100%.Finding all the collectables alone in his game is far more fun than the majority of games full stop these days imo.

For that alone, I feel this game is brilliant.

then you can always sell it or trade it in. sure you wont get what you paid for it, but you should get a decent amount considering how new it is.

ive beaten it on hard, gotten all but like 7 achievements, and am fully satisfied with having purchased it. what an awesome experience.

Hardcore halo and gears cridics and gamers will call this game over rated. Trust me my brother hates it and he has never even seen a commerical for it. This game got high reviews because it damn well earned them, I have been upset recently with the games that are comming out and finally a good game come along and a few assholes are saying its over rated. Do me a favor and go back to your x-men and spiderman games and leave batman for the men. You know why batman is the best superhero? Because he is not super, not at all. That is something you people got to relize, batman could kick the shit out of spiderman right after he leaves the x-men a bloody pulp.

    Gamesta100* Oct 1, 09
Don't want to start a fight but I think Spider-Man could kick the shit out of Batman.

Sure Batman is VERY intelligent and has loads of gadgets but SM's spider sense alone I think would help him kick Batman arse.SM while maybe not quite as smart is also quite far beyond the intellect of most people.Plus like you said, Batman isn't super, he's just an above average man.SM also has the strength of something like 25 men and FAR higher than average speed and agility. That coupled with the Spider Sense should mean that no matter what Batman throws at SM, he should easily be able to keep out of the way of Batmans advances.

Of course SM is by far my favourite superhero so I may be biased but in my honest opinion, I think SM could kick Batmans arse.

But I give Batman MAJOR kudos for being the ONLY superhero I like in the DC universe as I find the DC universe boring.

Man, Spiderman can beat Superman . . . ANY of the heroes! Which is why they don't like to put Marvel Heroes with DC. Spiderman would own all!

But Batman IS second to Spiderman.

      jimmystick27 Oct 1, 09
I see what you are saying and maybe im being biased too because batman has always been my favorite, but look at some of batman villians. Baine has the strength of 50 men ( but the intelligence of a tree), the scarecrow with the intelligence of a genius although weak but he has total power of your mind. I really don't know who would win in a battle but lets agree to disagree.

        Gamesta100* Oct 1, 09
Well Venom who is one of SM's biggest enemies also has the strength of about 50 men.Plus he doesn't trigger SM's spider sense so he can easily get the drop on SM but SM always manages to beat him.Venom also has the same abilities as SM only he's not as smart or as fast.Venom is also basically impervious to SM punches.
