Let's face the game is great. Games of the Year are supposed to represent everything that is good and wholesome about the industry, so Arkham Asylum is a logical choice for GOTY. But the year isn't over yet, and a few possible candidates have yet to give the Bat chase. So which ones can stand toe-to-toe with the Dark Knight?

I asked myself “what game coming out this year could possibly dethrone Arkham Asylum?” So I assembled this list of upcoming major video games in the name of knocking them all down. If any of these games actually do turn out to be better than Batman, then I may slip into a state of depression and drop out of school. If Prototype wins the award, then I’ll simply conclude that the gaming media is crooked and driven by behind-the-scenes shenanigans.

There's so many different journalists and gaming sites/magazines. Arkham Asylum will win at least one Game of the Year award.

as much as i love this game, i want to see uncharted 2 get the goty award, although mw2 is most likely to get it

Batman was great, it had it's low marks (Boss battles were incredibly undone) but it was one of the few games that got the overall experience right.

I'll wait for Uncharted and MW2 before any predictions.

Also, the part about getting drunk and pretending to be baked while playing Beatles? Why not just get baked?

Nothing can, there is absolutely no game this year which can take Arkham Asylum down from it's throne.

No sarcasm at all, it truly deserves GOTY.

Yea, that is always smart to do. Declare something GOTY before the year is over...

You must be seriously confused if you think the fact it deserves to win means anything when MW2 is coming this year.

MW2 doesn't deserve GOTY infact it deserves Crap Fest of the Year.

You quite clearly missed what I was saying. Either that or you just take any opportunity to mock MW2 that you can get. Either way, methinks the lady needeth take a breath.

mw2 didn't even come out yet and are already calling it crap? nice logic. add to the fact that cod4 mopped the floor with the majority of 07's games. and im sure mw2 will amaze this year as cod4 did in 07. i know its ur opinion and all but my point is try the game first then crticize it.

It'll get nominated to please the masses, but it'll probably go to MW2 with Uncharted 2 taking second (although I hope not as I LOVE how Uncharted is coming along). Arkham Asylum was a great game, it would make me happy to see such a fresh take on a comic book game win GOTY.

What is there to dethrone? It's the best superhero game to date, I'll give it that, but overall it's just great. The only reason why people are giving it so much praise as to put it up for GOTY is because Batman's past videogame iterations where complete shit.

Batman Forever on the SNES was FAR better than the movie was

Okay... that's not saying much... But I remember the NES one being bitchin as well

Then how come I think at this moment it's GOTY? Before this and not counting Lego Batman, I had only ever played the NES Batman and I loved it when I was a child.

    Tekken 6.
It obviously wont because fighting games and arcade play aren't popular enough over here but I know it'l be game of the year to me.

Tekken 6 is my most anticipated game and one of only two games that I'm VERY excited for.

I love how after ALL the hype of Killzone 2 & it's army of fanboys, It won't get any mention as GOTY *Tehe* =D

I know it's going to be Uncharted 2 or MW2 but my personal favourite game of 2009 (So far) was actually inFamous (A game I rated 4/5). I still love playing it, but thats just my personal favourite, it's obviously not going to win anything.

My bet is...Uncharted 2, MW2 & KZ2 & Halo 3 ODST will one or two from FPS fanboy sites.

Batman:AA was a fine game, I just don't really think it had the original features that a GOTY really should have. It was an excellent synthesis of lots of things we've seen in games before. The thing that was truly outstanding about it was the voice acting, script, and general Batman atmosphere. That's not a small thing I know, but still it just wasn't a varied enough game to make it GOTY year quality for me.

'dethrone'? it sounds like this guy already has the game down for goty. batman was okay.. but spending more than half of the game in detective mode (effectively ruining the amazing graphics), the disappointingly uncreative boss fights ("here. fight this kinda easy generic boss which you've already fought 3 times. okay, now fight him again with 15 henchmen attacking you. now do it with 20 henchmen, and theres 2 of that same boss at once"), and the predictable/unrewarding/anti-climactic ending kinda made it suck. you never even get to really fight the joker. lame.

No doubt it'll be a game I'm not too interested in playing at all. Unless it's U2, Then I'm only mildly interested.

    Fossil Fighters shall dethrone everyone!

    *jokes*

I think MW2 will win, but it'd be cool for a tie.

Now I haven't played Arkham Asylum as Batman and other superhero-esque games like those really aren't my thing, but I highly doubt it will be the GOTY. I mean it might be a contender if it really is that good, but I doubt it will be GOTY in the end. MW2, Uncharted 2 and R&C are all killer games.

This'll be a tough choice this year for the reviewers.

    Bale Fire Sep 22, 09
After just playing Infamous, I would think it could be a strong contender, even though I haven't played Arkham Asylum. Of course GOTY is all about hype, so I doubt Infamous has a real chance, at least for any of the big comps.

While MW2 or Uncharted 2 will most likely win the most GOTY awards, I'd like to see Arkham Asylum at least win a few. Not only because it was one of the best games I've played this year. But it was the only great Batman game in a long time, and would really help nudge Rocksteady in starting to consider a sequel.

Uncharted2, a goty award? in which category? best online, or probably sound design? no no, it must be the best innovation. a nice and fun game yes. bot goty - maybe only in the PS3 category.

"goty" is an award, some magazines/etc have a category "best game" though, giving that to U2 would be a joke btw. ie: link those are 2008' goty awards from Edge.
