It’s Official: Final Fantasy XIII Has Better Japanese Voice Acting...

...According to split-screen.com, anyway. They aren't a fan of Final Fantasy XIII's voice acting and believe that Square Enix simply shouldn't have bothered with an English localization.

Hmmm...

Not that Square-Enix actually put up a big banner saying so, but any one who even slightly cringed at the whiny shenanigans of Final Fantasy XIII’s voice cast will doubtless agree: This game would have been better with just a Japanese VO (voice over) and subtitles rather than the team going the whole hog with an English localization.

    I don't know about anyone else, but I still prefer average English actors to good Japanese ones.

    And the voices I have heard so far aren't that bad, not all great, but not bad.

      REALLY? That fake British shit in the opening of the E3 trailer was incredibly bad and they should really hire new voice actors or put the Japanese audio on PSN/XBL so people who want it can at least buy it.

          Cruxis, I don't want to sound like a dick here, but didn't you say it yourself SO4 vo's were so terrible that they were one of the reasons you didn't play that game?

          and to be fair, if the original language is that different, native vo's always sound a dozen times better than the translations, particularly in the case of japanese to english.

          Square Enix didn't have anything to do with the development of Star Ocean 4 though, they only published the title.

          tri-Ace will have chosen the VA's.

          no, that's simply not true. SquareEnix 've hired the guys who did vo's. tri-Ace are a development team. same as ie Crystal Dynamics developning TR for Eidos.

          same with all of the other tri-Ace games published by SE.

          It still sounds really bad. I don't mind if it's in English as long as they're good but the ones Square-Enix hire are BAD. Western RPGs have really good voice actors so why can't Square get them? They sound really unnatural in the way they speak and fyi, I can understand quite a lot of what they say in Japanese since the kind they use isn't that difficult, hence why I want Japanese audio with subs because somethings just get lost in translation. Just because people actually know another language they're nerds who live in their parents' basement? Get the *bleep* out.

          Square Enix's VA choices aren't half as bad as you're making them out to be.

          Sure everyone remembers the laughing scene in FFX, but the VA was still solid and Square have since learnt their lesson and have done a fine job with their new titles.

          As numerous people have said, and if you feel the Japanese they use is relatively simple, why don't you import the game instead of bitching about the English voices which you've heard all of 2 minutes of.

          TBH I'm sure one of the devs even said that they prefer the English VA.

      I prefer the English Actors to Japanese ones in the PSP game Dissidia, Not heard them on FFXIII caus i refuse to watch trailers =d

        So. I don't want to have to read the subtitles all the time, I want to look at the game properly.

        All because some dudes got some obsession with everything Japanese. Why don't they just not release the game here and make it only availably through export.

          Good luck playing a game while reading a book. Subtitles aren't much of a distraction (they take like nothing away from viewing the game), and the fact of the matter is that if the voices really are shitty then, well, they're shitty.

          Furthermore, saying "just import it" is the biggest *bleep*ing joke I've ever heard. Last I checked, the text isn't in English in the imported version, making it nearly impossible to play. People don't want to have to listen to shitty voice acting, not play the whole game in Japanese.

          Personally, I'd just turn on subtitles and mute voices if they're that terrible.

          If they want Japanese voices, they can learn the *bleep*ing language and import. If they're not willing to, then that's entirely their problem, it has nothing to do with Square Enix.

          Maybe people should stop acting like entitled little shits and actually put some effort into what they want, instead of bitching when Square Enix doesn't meet them miles beyond halfway.

    Yeah I never really understood everyone's obsession to HEAR Japanese but not be able to speak it. Who wants to play a game they can't understand? But like Cruxis said, if they really want to hear the Japanese voices then why the hell haven't they imported it yet?!

      yeah i dont get it either. all these dumbass anime purists who will NOT watch anime with English dubs, has to be Japanese audio and subtitles. apparently they would rather be concentrating on the bottom of the screen the whole time than watching the anime and listening to the audio. i mean thats what you do with movies and TV shows isnt it? whats worse is they think they are better than other anime fans like me who like watching anime with English dubs, they think they're so much better just cause they watch in the original language.

        You don't know what you're talking about. Having subtitles takes nothing away from watching whatever it is you're watching (you literally look at the subtitles for less than a second to read them and understand what's going on). There's no real "Elitism" either, just some sort of fantasy scenario you've made up to have something to complain about.

        Seriously, if the voices suck then they suck; personal preferences over language have nothing to do with it.

          no, there ARE elitists who look down at those of us who like English dubs. i have talked to more than one. both on Neo and in real life. like when someone is recommending a series to me, usually ill ask if there are Eng dubs, and they either laugh or get an "what are you, 12?" look on their face every time. the Jap actors are usually better sure, but that doesnt mean i want to watch the Jap version just for that. but there are some really good English voice work, like Ghost in the Shell, and Hellsing is pretty good IMO. has a lot to do with Crispin Freeman i think.

          if someone really prefers to watch in original Japanese with subtitles, well alright thats fine, just DO NOT thumb your nose at me because i dont share that desire. its extremely irritating. the fact that you dont think there are ppl like that just shows that you are likely one of those ppl.

    I think the Japanese voice actors are better but I will always take listening over reading subtitles.
