ResumePlay's Michael Perry writes about the details announced on the controversial "demo play" that will be included with New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii.

Nintendo’s UK site released details on the “demo play” feature announced that will first be showed up in New Super Mario Bros for the Wii. This feature allows the player to watch a video of how to get through the stage and allow them to “jump in” at any point of watching this. This was what most gamers thought how it was going to be used and they have confirmed it.

This game looks like it's really been dumbed down for 3 year olds, with what that sounds like.

Just when you think Nintendo couldn't get any more casual than they already were.

Too bad we can't get demo play for Ocarina of Time.

If you're still complaining about the Water Temple, you should probably give up gaming.

Demo play + Water Temple would make me want to jump off something tall.

The water temple is the only zelda temple that pisses me off. I've beaten every console zelda, except OoT because of the goddamn water temple.

lol, why? Water Temple's freaking easy. It's just a bit confusing in its layout, which is combatted by actually paying attention to the dungeon map.

Dude I can't believe you still haven't beaten it. You should get on that.

It's definitely not easy but not that hard, either.

For some games a demo play can be awesome. Ikaruga had something like this (sans the ability to jump in mid demo) and it was a nice way to see potential scoring opportunities. Of course, emulating those demo runs in actual play yourself was never an easy task.

It seems so really pointless for something like these kinds of games though. If it's anything like the DS game then I doubt it would be hard enough for any half decent player to actually need to use it. Still, I suppose it's optional and the rest of us can continue getting through games the usual way.

I don't see how this is so bad. Its not like they force you to use it. It is there for people who want/need it. More features is always better than less. It is up to the player themselves to decide if they will use it.

It discourages unskilled/stupid players from becoming skilled/not so stupid.

Not necessarily. Some people have lots of games to play and don't want to spend huge chunks of time on one part of the game. Think about it. There are games out there (though mostly old school games) that were extremely difficult to the point where the game was no longer fun. What if they just want to see the end? Of what if they just use Demo play to see a tactic?

That's what hint sites, walkthroughs, etc. are for. This void was filled long ago.

Anyway, those games are rare today. And for the people who can't handle them or don't find the challenge fun, they shouldn't be playing them in the first place.

What's the point in having such extremes (hardcore/demo modes) in a game, anyway? The easy/normal/hard system has been perfectly sufficient. If you can't handle pretty much any game on easy these days, you should just give up anyway.

I agree with your last statement. My thing with demo mode is I think it should only show a possible tactic to how to beat something. It should not allow a player to jump in a take over. Actually, official word is that it will only be a demo and will not allows for jumping in.
