Gary Marston of dualshockers.com doesn't see what the big deal is about Call of Duty 4. He believes it is "just another average shooter that plays exactly the same as everything else in the genre". Agree? Disagree?

I’ve never been more excited in my life. I’m given an opportunity to publically vent my personal feelings over Call of Duty 4, and I know you’re all immediately going to go batshit crazy once it’s published. So with the possibility of death threats aside, let’s crack on with why I plain just don’t like Call of Duty 4.

First off, I’m not one of those irritating people that “dislike” something just to stand out from the crowd. I don’t really mind the whole hype malarkey as it usually tends to point me in the right direction for my next game purchase. Hell, the main reason I purchased Call of Duty 4 was because of the hype! There’s no denying it, First-Person shooters are a saturated market. The quality titles are few and far between, and it is in this spirit which made me wonder just why so many millions of people admire and adore Call of Duty 4 so much?

Argh, grammar. Otherwise, pretty funny blog. I was rather looking forward to the shitstorm from readers, but the comments section is closed!

TBH I'm not a CoD worshiper either, though I don't dislike it.

Why is MW2 so special? It's the sequel to CoD4. That's why.

    Nice.
I finally caved and tried the demo the other day and really didn't care for it either. I hate the way it "felt" -- very cheap. Granted I didn't spend much time with it, but for that reason.

Over-simplifying the story, and bitching about graphics...

    ...good points bud.

I haven't really seen the appeal of Call of Duty either, I mean I've never been a fan of realistic shooters, but Call of Duty 4 doesn't seem to be really much different to the rest of the market. I've only played parts of it however.

I agree that the story overall really isn't that brilliant, but how it ties into the gameplay is very innovative. It's hard to tell a story and still keep the gameplay interesting, but I think Infinity Ward executed it perfectly with Call of Duty 4. It's really just those tiny climatic moments within the story that keep it good, not the whole story overall. I don't think any game has really been able to create a big movie title-esque story and still maintain gameplay all throughout.

What I really find ridiculous is the fact that he claims Battlefield: Bad Company had a better story... really? I think he's gotten it into his head that originality is a lot more important than functionality, which I'm sure most agree that it is not.

I have to agree. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is highly over rated. It's not even the best Call of Duty game.

The graphics are virtually a minor step up from Playstation 2; where the walls look like one blotchy grey sickish colour you’d find presented on Runescape on a Windows XP 1998.
The graphics don't make the game. Looking nice is a bonus, not a requirement. You can have the most beautiful game on the planet, but that's doesn't matter if the game plas like shit. Bitching about poor graphics to prove your point =/= good argument.

What is the story? You’re a soldier who has to kill a terrorist? Very original. Now suddenly you’re in control of a man whose name is based off of a soluble cylindrical bar that I use to wash myself with - god help us all. You’re in a better position than your previous soldier; however you’re still trying to get the same terrorist… Kay. This goes on and on until the terrorist is eventually killed in what can only be described as a “10 second ending”.
Way to dumb the story down. I like how he skips over the part where you take control of a Marine who, after risking his life to save another Marine, is hit by the shockwave of a nuclear weapon and crashlands where he spend his last few moments walking aimlessly in a devastated city with his last sight being a bright white light generated by a mushroom cloud. Or the part where you lie bleeding on a collapsing bridge while all the men that you fought with throughout the game are killed one by one around you.

If there's one thing I really like about you Kave En, it's how you manage to express your points so well.

Anyway, the writer wants to get traffic. The points he makes aren't exactly valid, and as Turmoil pointed out he's conveniently left out a lot of the game.

The story isn't original, this is true. Who said it was? What the story is, however, is both convincing and immersive. There are numerous moments that are damn near unforgettable, such as what Turmoil mentioned with the nuke, along with crawling around in a ghillie suit, and trying to rush off a sinking ship, to name a few.

So, sure, it isn't a very unique story. But for what it is, it is very well done. It pits the player in very intense and powerful moments that gets the blood pumping. Do you go see a summer action flic for the deep, innovative story? No. You go to see shit blow up, and you damn well *bleep*ing enjoy it. But even comparing CoD4 to an action flic is kind of harsh, because it does feel a fair bit more emotional.

As for the graphics, I don't honestly know what he means. I found them pretty good, but even if they aren't up to par with whatever delusional standards he may have, going as far as to say they are a "minor step up from the PS2" indicates – along with how poor of a case he makes – that he is trying to stir up fanboy rage for traffic.

The story of CoD4 puts you right into the life of a soldier, kind of. The whole purpose of fighting and survivability, it sure as hell was engaging. Most war games are generic, we get an objective done, finish a mission, become a one-man army, blah blah blah, but CoD4 brought the role a little more down to Earth.

Eh, I happen to love the CoD series, it's my favorite FPS series. The style, gameplay, etc., I could tell that IW put time and effort into the games.

What I hate about call of duty is what it has done to every other FPS out there. Because it was so successful companies tried to copy that instead of making their FPS game with its own feel.

Resistance 2 is a prime example. The first game was great, but in 2 they changed everything and it felt to much like CoD and that is why a lot of people hated it. They changed what made resistance great.

Killzone 2 tried to be its own game, but when the demo came out, everyone bitched about the controls because they weren't like CoD. In fact the controls in KZ2 worked just fine for THAT GAME. But GG still released a patch allowing them to play with CoD controls, but all those people who did that sucked at the game because it was more difficult to play with those settings.

Jack shit. No one says its revolutionary apart from fanboys.

What everyone agrees on is that it nails the genre pretty darn well.

I really must disagree on the story. COD4's story wasn't really all that deep; it was just atmospheric. Compare it to games like Uncharted and MGS4 and you'll find it's fairly thin. MW2 is about the gameplay though. Hell, KZ2's story wasn't great either, but it was fun anyway.

Metal Gear games have too much plot -- they border on masturbatory.

Really, MGS is the only game series that made you actually think about the story. Sure it didn't need to be so complex, but I don't think fans would rather have it any other way. If future MGS games started dumbing down the plot, I doubt most of us would be pleased.

Hiring decent editors would have done Kojima a world of good. The MGS plots are fine the way they are, they just needed all the long-winded irrelevant bullshit cut out.

There is no such thing as too much plot in MGS.

IMO NO shooter has a story as brilliant as the MGS series.MGS is my favourite series of all time and I woulnd't change a single thing about them.Well I would like a MGS that takes like 100 hours to finish but that's it Also some cutscenes are like no other cutscenes imo.I LOVE EVERY single thing about the MGS series.

MGS1 is my most played game of all time.

As for COD4, I can't say anything about it other than I have never been interested in it and likewise with the second one.

          Yeah me too...

Wasn't a fan of Raiden. He's cool in MGS4, sure, but in MGS2 he just annoyed me...was disappointed that Snake was only playable in the first chapter. Eh, not that Raiden's bad, i just prefer Snake.

Meh he covers his privates.Plus I've seen lots of that in porn anyway so an animated penis would be nothing

Do you even watch porn? Watching regular boy girl porn doesn't mean you see very little of the males privates.Hell I swear some camera persons are gay or women because they spend half the scene focused on the damn penis

I am actually very picky with my porn.

The way you wrote your post made it seem like you've been watching porn where the men always cover their privates (not like protection ). I'm pretty sure that's what Slumpy was referring to.
