Hype is part of gaming. Every major release gathers hype before release and the game often doesn't live up to those expectations. Even if the game is a great game, it still manages to fall short to what people expected.

Hype is necessary for gaming. By hyping upcoming titles, publishers and developers get a lot of attention. Whether the game is hyped for being part of a long running series, graphics, gameplay modes, or another feature, gamers cling to every piece of information that gets released for the hyped title. Some titles live up to the hype and even surpass it, while others struggle to live up to the massive amounts of hype that accumulate over the development cycle.

I'd rather read about overhyped games than I would an article about overhyped games, personally.
A meritable article would explore the psychology of hype.

Killzone 2 may have been overhyped as the best FPS ever (which it isn't), but it's still a very respectable game.

I think when you talk a out overhyped you have to take into account that the game didn't deliver. I think Killzone 2 delivered in terms of graphics and the great campaign. The multiplayer i thought needed some work control wise but they were able to take elements from games like TF2 and COD4 to make a respectable multiplayer experience. So i dont think you can say that KZ2 was overhyped especially since they didnt say it was a "halo killer" like they did with KZ1. i really challenge anyone to explain to me how the graphics in the final version weren't at least close to what they showed in the famous CG trailer.

The ironic thing is this time they didn't say Halo killer but Killzone 2 may infact be a better game than Halo 3. Though they are both good so I think I will leave that can of worms unopened.

All of the KZ2 overhype came from the fanbase, not from the developer.

Killzone 2 is still an incredible FPS, regardless of hype. To be honest, most of it's detractors are those who sucked at it - everyone I know who didn't like Killzone 2 said so because "Uh the aiming is too slow!". Welcome to realism land, friends - it makes for a much better and more strategic experience than the 'point-and-shoot' lethargy of Call Of Duty.

I love how 4 out of the 5 games are PS3 games.

    quote
Now, Halo 3 is a very well made game and a solid entry to the Halo franchise, but after the initial launch hype died down, gamers saw the game for what it was: a well made FPS.
This might sound weird, but does that sentence bother anyone?...It just doesn't sound right for some reason, like as if the grammar is weird or something... Maybe I'm crazy.

No you're right; he seems to be saying the same thing twice. I got the impression he was going to say that after the hype died down, Halo 3 was just another FPS; that's how the tone felt. Instead he just repeats what he said.

I guess you could take from it that he finds Halo as a series to be a cut above most FPS', but Halo 3 was not. But yeah, that's not clear.

The first Halo was great, and the second was good because it had aircraft in it. The third one seemed to just cut itself out from the last two, except for maybe The Forge.

Super Mario Galaxy and Zelda: Twilight Princess.

Both overhyped piles of crap, Twilight Princess was possibly the most easy and boring Zelda game yet and don't even get me started on Galaxy.
