Time after time again we look at video games shows/conventions to get a glimpse on what Nintendo will be releasing in their line-up each year, but they never seem to announce their next big IP, instead we're getting rehashes of Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Bros. Here's the games that should already get their entries on Nintendo's most popular console.
You would have to be in denial to not say that the Wii’s current line up of games is relatively uninteresting. This is by no means a shot at Nintendo, if you look at the release list for the rest of ‘09 and early next year you’ll be hard pressed to find something to get really excited about. Save for New Super Mario Bros Wii, Nintendo hasn’t even been exploiting their greatest strength: a database of unique IPs. Instead of utilizing their wide list of franchises the up coming months brings us things like a sequel to Mario Galaxy, Wii Fit Plus, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Really, what did any of the Starfox entries last generation do? Adventures was a fairly generic Zelda ripoff plastered with Fox to get some sales. Assault was an attempt at returning to why 64 was fun, but threw too much unnecessary crap in to try and please the shooter crowd. Fzero? A couple of forgettable GBA entries and GX which lacked all the character and fun of X, appealing to the "hardcore" graphics whores and game masochists that rule the internet. And guess what? A Wii entry would have nothing better to offer! It would have the same basic graphics, controls with motion would be too slow for the game so it would have to use a pad, not to mention the purists you think are Nintendo's life blood would demand a pad, and internet would suck, and never reach the necessary 30 player online for the game to be successful. Paper Mario? We've had a paper Mario on Wii. They've put out even more Mario RPG's on DS. Been there, done that.
The only legitimate offerings this list has is Kid Icarus, although the series only has a cult following at this point making it a pretty low priority while Nintendo counts its piles of money, and Luigi's Mansion, which frankly is necessary with the number of Horror games coming out for the system already.
I've been playing Nintendo products my entire life, from Game and Watch on through. In that time, I've played the majority of the first party offerings Nintendo has produced. Yes, I'm looking for new experiences, that's the whole purpose of Wii in the first place! If I was looking for the same old same old, I'd have bought a 360 instead and stuck with the "tried and true" gameplay models. What I want is a good mix of new experiences, such as Wii Sports and its ilk, as well as classics I love like Zelda and Metroid, both of which Nintendo has provided plenty of with Wii. You know, the really big hitters that Nintendo has and still is consistently putting out, unless you want to ignore the multitude of Mario, Zelda, and Metroid on the system already.
It's only when people start whining about what midrange, tired titles they personally liked when they were kids while completely ignoring all the great stuff on the system now, even while Nintendo tries to pull out fan favorite titles that it gets on my nerves. I mean, they just finished coming out with Punchout, Exite, and Wario Land followups, and have announced Golden Sun and Sin and Punishment sequels as well. People ignore masterpieces like Muramasa and Little King's Story so they can complain about another Starfox or Fzero, and its just plain sad.
Similarly, some of the choices I find really odd. Kid Icarus? We haven't seen him in his own games since the 8 bit days? It has nostalgia value at best but it hardly has the established fan base the article seems to be suggesting it has to draw in the customers en masse. Likewise with Luigi's Mansion. I mean, why? It was a good game but not something that needs to be established into a series and ultimately it's yet another Mario game, even if Mario himself isn't the star.
I do think the Wii would benefit from a new Starfox and F-Zero set of games, but I hardly think their absence makes the Wii lineup terrible.
