Quantic Dream's CEO David Cage thinks game stories are 'light years away' from Hollywood movies.
Well perhaps Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will change his mind! Pushsquare.com's Twiggy certainly believes the game puts Hollywood movies to shame...

I don’t want to get into details about plot. I don’t want to spoil things for those of you who haven’t played Uncharted yet – although you really should be asking yourselves ‘why not?’. I just want to say – right here, right now – for my weekly column, that Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is without doubt the best written video game of all time.

I don't see how this game alone has to have a better story than movies.

Plenty of games have stories far greater than any movie. Besides, the dev's jobs are harder, they're expected to keep their audience interested for an approximate minimum of 20 hours.

Whenever David Cage opens his mouth about this topic he is generally talking about those Oscar movies. Those movies that are all about the script, those movies that are so well written even Ricky Gervais would come accross as an acting genius. Uncharted 2 does put Hollywood to shame but it's shaming different styles of film, things like Indiana Jones and the mindless action flick. Not downplaying Uncharted 2 it's brilliant but it's not an Oscar winner. Heavy Rain is different it's a game that is imposing itself with a script like films such as Crash, movies that are deep and emotionally involved. David Cage is a man that should be in Hollywood writing movies but he's instead writing genre pushing video games.

Ok, this game is getting too much *bleep*ing hype. There's no way this game can top great movies like the Godfather trilogy, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Pulp Fiction, Scarface, or The Shawshank Redemption.

Thank you! I mean, i ain't disputing that the game isn't good, of course it is! But ffs, it's not going to beat the great Hollywood films when it comes to storyline and plot build up, hell i don't think any game actually will, but it puts alot of the crappy Hollywood films like Jumper to shame.

LotR and Jumper are books. Incidentally, one was adapted really well and the other wasn't.

I'm sure Uncharted 2 is a great game, but this hype is getting ridiculous. Anyway, isn't it possible to celebrate something without belittling other people's work?

I have to agree too. I've yet to play the game, but seriously, the hype it's getting is simply reminiscent of the bandwagon mentality that gamers so very often tend to have. I know the game is awesome and all, but it's not the end-all of all games. There have been some games with a much better story I am sure (don't want to say for certain, since I've yet to play it), and gameplay as well.

In terms of complexity, there have been better stories in games before. However, in terms of likeability and compelling characters that you can actually attach to, I really don't think there are many better than what I've seen in Uncharted 2. Go play the game, mate, you'll see what I mean

The thing is, It is a GREAT game. Alot of people underestimated it and those are the people who are causing all this hype. Though there are many movies that could be and are better.

I'll just say that, if this game were in fact a movie, it wouldn't be as good. The voice actors seem to be doing just as good a job as if there were real actors there.

But saying this game puts Hollywood movies to shame is a bold statement.

I'd have to disagree with you and I'm being plainly honest. It's quite simple what makes Uncharted 2's story so great, the characters. The story itself isn't anything special, it has it's cool parts dealing with Marco Polo and what not but it's the characters that connect you to the game and the story.
And I can easily say that I have enjoyed the personalities of the whole cast of Uncharted 2 significantly more than most Hollywood movies. Truly great movies are few and far between. Just as games are.

        Which part are you disagreeing?

But no, the story isn't anything great, but atleast its not covering something we've seen in movies or games before. Thats what I really enjoyed about the first, and the second seemed to pull some ancient myth out of a hat that I never really read into. Kudos to them.

The part about the game putting Hollywood movies to shame being bold. I don't think it's bold at all. I think it puts many to shame with ease, making the statement not bold.

Yeah their premises are always pretty interesting. They bring things and people from history that we're all familiar with back into the light with a new twist.

With most action movies, yeah, it puts them to shame. There just isn't enough time to develope the story in an action movie in 2 hrs. We have a 10+ hr game, easily enough time to work out all the kinks in the story.

But as someone else said, comparing this game to the likes of The Godfather, Scarface, LotR, is a bit bold. But for the most part it puts quite a lot of movies to shame.
