Aaron Thomas from bitmob.com has written a touching article that will move even those not interested in the gaming industry. It really puts into perspective how pointless it is insulting people who dislike a popular game or arguing over whether or not a game or a console is good...

I’ve written this article to remind myself just what is -- and isn’t -- important in this world. It turns out that video games aren’t all that important. Arguing whether or not a game or a console is good or not... everyone’s life should be so amazing that they have time to worry about such petty and trivial matters.

"Not one of the 75 people who have reviewed the game has given it less than a 9.0. Nobody in the entire industry seems to think that the game is anything less than stellar. It makes me furious that not one person has registered a dissenting opinion on the game -- I’m legitimately upset by this."

So it's impossible for all these people have honestly thought it was a stellar experience? Because that's very clearly the implication here.

Also, he's not legitimately upset by it, he couldn't be, because that would also imply that he somehow has a kind of ruling over others opinion. When the very nature of an opinion is absent of others jurisdiction. Look up the word legitimately if you don't understand my reasoning.

For a games journalist, you think someone might have a better understanding of the English language before making an ass out of himself. I'm with him on the whole, games aren't that important in the grand scheme of things, but this guy is very clearly and desperately vying for attention. Because another glowing review of a clearly highly polished game isn't going to get him a miraculous amount of hits, not like a negative review like this one would. I'm not saying he's lying about not enjoying Uncharted 2, but he's defintely trying too hard, if that isn't apparent enough on it's own.

Also, I must say, while Uncharted 2 has been getting great reviews, I honestly don't see it nearly as overhyped as everyone makes it out to be. The game deserves the praise. Naughty Dog made this game in 18 *bleep*ing months and I'll be damned if you want to try and argue that this game isn't an unbelievably polished product with incredible production values and gameplay that are made even more surprising when you consider in how short a time it wa made. Seriously, a year and a half. You don't see this kind of quality in that amount of time from nearly any other developer. Whether or not you enjoy it is another story, but respect the art.

Also, I'll throw this in for good measure. If nobody should care that he doesn't like Uncharted 2, then why should anyone care about his reviews in general? I'd like to see him say that about a review of a game he likes (actually he strikes me as the kind of person that would just to make a point, like he doesn't do it for us or something, he does it for himself, even though without us he wouldn't have this job). Come on man. It's your freaking profession. Quit trying to be all holier than thou.

Yes I read it, cancer is heartbreaking, and losing the people you love and care about is even harder. But these kinds of article are just unnecessary. Really, had he centered this around gaming in general it would have made sense. Since he centered it around Uncharted 2 it seems pretty clear to me he just wanted to be controversial.

you've just made yourself sound like an even bigger ass. i'm pretty sure he just wanted to get out the idea that there is more important things than gaming in general and was using uncharted 2 as an example, however giving you some credit he should have mentioned this.
sorry for sounding even slightly angry, but i get what hes on about - my was told he was in the same position too just the other day. however luckily it was a misdiagnoses.

I figured I may be seen as an ass with my statements but I addressed all the compassionate aspects of his argument. He's absolutely right, but this is not the way you go about it. It just comes off as really preachy, it sounded to me like he's all high on himself in an attempt to sound really profound.

Anyone else get that vibe? I mean maybe I just have a crude perspective when it comes to most things but it seems like he's going for pity with the way he talks about everything. It just comes off as an act like he's the only one with tough problems in his life.

Dude he's talking about his friend having cancer -- I really don't think being high on himself and wanting to sound really profound are things up on his list. You're thinking too hard.

But apparently he felt it necessary to write this absolutely unnecessary article.

Here's my point. If he didn't write it for us then who did he write it for, himself? If so, then this is absolutely unnecessary ad I don't see how you couldn't see it as preachy.

Congratulations, you wrote a long ass comment on something unnecessary; what does that make you?

          Don't answer, I honestly don't care.

Well, comparing video games to cancer is pretty.....yeah in the first place, but he makes a good point. But I mean, there's almost no way to argue his point. It's fact. I'm pretty sure that MOST people would put down the controller to go see their friend in their last moments at a hospital....

No shit right? Who cares that much about videogames that they can't put down a controller to go see someone they care about?

When I was 12, my mother had cancer as well. My parents never told me that it was terminal, and as a result, I continued to concern myself with video games, naively thinking that the cancer would just go away.

I wish I could go back and spend more time with my mother. But at the same time, I know it wasn't my fault. You're never prepared when someone close to you is dying. He shouldn't beat himself up over it.

All about balance...I really liked his point though, it's a good reminder of what really matters.

This article is basically saying that video games aren't really important, well no shit. I don't think anyone legitimately "needs" video games (unless it's their job to play them), it's just something to pass the time and entertain ourselves with. If people are focusing more time on games than on family or friends, especially ones in need, they have a real problem.

However there's nothing wrong, in and of itself to play or argue about video games regardless of weather it's "important" or not because what matters is if you understand how to manage yourself so that you don't obsess yourself over trivial things, like video games.

Trying to make EVERYTHING you do in life has some sort of deeper meaning behind it is just going cause undue stress and would probably be unhealthy at some point.

Who are you to say games can't be art? Give me one example of something that actually prevents them from being art. Feel free to show your ignorance by stating there are no artistic games, too.

What the hell are you talking about? I never said anything about art, did you even read what I wrote!?

          chautemoc Oct 20, 09
You said entertainment is not important. We could say then art is the opposite of entertainment (art is entertaining, but not exclusively entertainment), and therefore important.

          Zero and X Oct 20, 09
I was speaking in the context of our survival and the survival of our loved ones. considering this article was about this author's friend having cancer. In comparison to those things, no, entertainment is not important, not that it wasn't important in general.

Well be better as sure hell be putting his friends battling cancer before a damn video game, no matter what it is.

    "Video games aren't that important"

Glad he came to that sudden realization. Whoever thinks some video game such as Uncharted 2 has priority over a friend in the hospital needs to go jump off a mountain.

Guys, in the comments the author notes that writing about the game and his friend's cancer was just a way of documenting his misplaced priorities. He states that he was showing how he got crazy-upset but in retrospect, it was completely ludicrous compared to his buddy's cancer battle.

As for his points about Uncharted 2, he's entitled to feel that way. And it's possible yes many of the reviewers were afraid to give it anything lower than the standard established by fans and the big boys. Plus, this is his blog.

    Chill out.

      On the same website...
"Why your business shouldn't be a soapbox"

Seriously... Need I say more. This is what makes this article worthless and stupid, and makes it more than just a guy trying to document his misplaced priorities.

This article would have been fine because there's nothing really wrong with it other than his attempt to bash Uncharted 2. No, I'm not saying you can't bash Uncharted 2 I'm saying you don't try to compare cancer and a video game and justify the reason. He makes it sound like all the other reviewers think videogames are more important than real life and the people in their lives and that's why they all gave it such a good score, because they care about videogames more. Plus you get to the arrogance of talking about being legitimately pissed about this fact. It all just makes for a terrible article that could have really meant something but instead just reads like a guy trying too hard to be controversial. If you guys don't see it then I don't know what to tell you. I guess my bullshit detector just goes off instantly when nonsense is spouted at the outset.
Guess what though, he succeeded when this article was posted on gamegrep and got his website a bunch more hits. Hell, you might even argue that my initial post helped his website too garnering more controversy and attention. No matter the way you look at it, this article is a waste of time because of the way it was written. Who's it for? None of us need to be reading it, this guy should have wrote it in his diary.

Some of us find it interesting. I'd say you wasted the most time over it getting this worked up, judging by the comments thus far.

I guess it's hard to see where the differences between him and I are for some of you. I didn't write a whole article talking about wasting time and understanding priorities and such. I'm not complaining about my misplaced priorities and my lack of time and such, I had plenty of time to write my posts, and it really only took me 2 minutes to do so I'm not really worried about "losing" so much of my time.

Zero, it appears we're misunderstanding each other again and again. Oh well.
Anyway, I should clarify I wasn't trying to personally attack you, I've been merely frustrated with the "games can only be entertainment and nothing more hurr hurr" notion. And I'm on a major tangent now but whatever -- I see games the same as music, film, books, etc: it can be just entertaining, or it can be artistic and entertaining. It's baffling to me we have a double standard for games when they combine ALL of these forms into one and add interactivity on top of it.

I never disagreed with the notion that video games can be art, just look at Okami and Shadow of the Colossus. I think you just took what I said the wrong way.

        chautemoc Oct 20, 09
        It would appear so.
You did say they're not important and trivial though, which I don't (necessarily) agree with. If games can be art, isn't art important?

    Red 9 Oct 20, 09
Maybe the game just is actually that good. Sometimes there are things that are simply and legitimately THAT GOOD. Plus, nobody's making him play the game.
