Electronic Theatre delivers a brief discussion of the inventive tactics used by videogame publishers to soften the impact of pre-owned sales by retailers.

Of the publishers taking steps to combat the pre-owned effect, Microsoft has been most obvious in their approach. The recent, and hugely successful launch of Halo 3: ODST saw retail discs accompanied by the promise of an invitation to join the Halo Reach Beta Testing Phase in 2010 – but only as long as the retail disc remained in your possession.

    EA is also doing this with Dragon Age Origins, I believe, where you get DLC expansions free if you have a new copy, but have to pay if it's used (a re-sell).

      Yeah, about $30 worth of DLC at that. Of course that doesn't stop people with a pissy sense of entitlement to say "It should be on the game anyway."

    This just irritates me. If I want to buy a game for a bit cheaper, I'll get it pre-owned. Especially since most games don't drop in price for months on end - I managed to get SF4 and RE5 almost mint about three weeks after release for £25 each.
