Games seem to becoming more expensive as the years go by and (especially with the current economic situation) many people are holding back on buying luxuries such as $50+ video games.
Obviously developers and publishers need to make a profit, but when does it go too far? Do video games cost too much?

This past year I have noticed something that has begun to bother me constantly when on the look out for new games to play.
My problem with modern games is the pricing both long term and short term.
To start off lets see how the money has changed over time.
Back in the early days new titles could end up costing as little as £2 for games on your home computers (but they were normally rubbish games), bigger and more serious titles normally cost around a tenner, which was a lot of money for the time.

Yes, they do. I have thought this for a long time. I honestly think that publishers make way to much money off of sales and think that games should start out at $20 (US). I honestly don't even think this would hurt them because they would sell so many more games that way game sales would be astronomical.

So true. The games are way to overpriced here in AU. One game takes my whole weekly pay almost

Well hey, a new game a week isn't too shabby.

Do you shop at JB Hi-Fi for your games? Go there, everything is $20 cheaper.

I think they do in the UK as well and I can only see it getting worse now that MW2 is gonna be £55 (I think?).

I always buy my games from little games store now, so that I can get the latest releases for £30-£35 after a few days of release.

That's why I only buy games on websites such as eBay and Amazon. I recently bought Uncharted 2 for the full of price of $60, but that was just so I wouldn't have to wait for the price to go down, because I really wanted it. For the most part, most of the PS3 games I've bought had been $20 - $30 less than what I would've had to for on its release date.

To put it simply. Yes they do. most new games cost £40 or more (in UK) way too much.

Also anyone noticed movies are starting to cost too much. they used to cost about £7/8 not they are about £15.

    Whats going on !!!????

I would buy many more game than I have now if they were $60 in Australia. It's a joke we are paying $100-$120 when our exhange rate with America is so good.

Hmm, well it depends on the game for me. A game like L4D I'd gladly spend the full price, whilst something like Wet, I'd wait for a price drop. $60 is quite hefty, no doubt, but eh, companies are trying to make a good profit, what with all the marketing, time, and development gone into these games, and the value of the dollar is getting lower.

For AAA titles, they're putting WAY too much money into it. I remember being shocked when I heard Gears of War's cost to make; I imagine production cost has skyrocketed since then.

I'm just waiting for the recession to be over so I can get games for $40 - $50 again (unless devs/publishers are going to be little bitches and still keep the outrageous price of $60 - $70)

Hahahaha yes they do.I think 20 or 30 would be a fair price for a video game.

I really miss the days when I was paying only $40 for new titles and $20 for mid-life titles . . . $10 for old.

In Israel, absolutely. (every new game costs 420 NIS which is the equivalent of 113.5$ and it takes a long while till it drops somehow. NO THANKS).

Most of my games this gen are pre-owned. Mirror's Edge I bought brand new because it was half price. MotorStorm: Pacific Rift was brand new, but it came free with the PS3. Uncharted 2 was brand new and it is the only game I have paid full RRP for - and it's the only one that was worth every cent of the 109.95AUD most new release games cost.

Haha, yeah, video games are quite expensive, and so are the consoles, but what else isn't expensive in these days?

For that exact reason, I haven't bought a video game for myself in nearly three years. I have other things I would rather spend my earned money on.
