The average age of gamers is 30 to 40 years old, which may come as a surprise to many people as, generally, gaming is associated with young kids and teens. So is there a time when you become too old for games? When is it time to walk away, if at all?

By and large the default assumption remains that sooner or later, we're supposed to "grow up" or "grow out" of games: "Isn't he (or she) a little too old for that?"

I've started asking myself this question lately. I'm 22, and the vast majority of my friends play video games far more infrequently than I do. I'm not a huge player by any means -- on an average day I'll put in an hour or two. It's definitely a hobby of mine, but one which I've found is more of a solitary rather than a social pursuit. When I'm playing video games, they tend to be of the single-player variety, and I usually do it when burned out of work or extracurriculars for the day. When I want social interaction, I put the video game controller down rather than picking it up, and go out to a bar or call up some friends and watch a movie.

I've also started thinking about it more because real-world responsibilities are looming large. I'm currently in law school, and we just hit the season to begin hunting for summer jobs. With all these simultaneous obligations to juggle, gaming's definitely going to be taking a back seat for the next few months.

Personally I don't think you can ever be too old for games. The time to walk away though is either when it's stopping you from doing other things like actually going out with some friends or when your sick of it.

The older I get the more I'll play, honestly.

The question put forward by the article is about as silly as asking if someone is too old to read a book or watch TV. It's an entertainment medium just as much as those others.

Obviously if you're playing games so much as to be damaging then that's an indicator to walk away, but that's an entirely different matter that has nothing to do with age.

I'm almost certainly far older than all the other posters here, and I consider games just another form of entertainment just like IP said. I couldn't care less what people think about what I do with my free time, although the reflexes are indeed slowing up a little and affecting my choices.

As far as I'm concerned, video games are meant to be fun, so unless you've "grown out of fun" you can enjoy video games pretty much to your grave.

Agreed, its not an age thing, its simply how much it appeals to you until it doesn't anymore, if that happens.

Yeah well i used to think that about teletubbees and cartoons in general. You never know if you're going to grow out of things when you get older, or if you'll even have the time for it in your life.

There's always time to play games as an adult, that's one thing they've got going for them. It's relatively easy to enjoy them for twenty minutes here and there-until you can gorge on them over the weekend

I wouldn't like to be a 60 year old being screamed at by a 7 year old because my reflexes aren't very good on Halo.

For me its when the current series I enjoy playing are either no longer made or have been blown out of proportion so that the original intent is lost.

But Rock Band could never die. Only cease to provide new songs every week. So when that happens, I'll consider it. But I'm just too damn competetive right now, so its kinda hard ATM.

Never too old for games, unless it's multiplayer. My old guild leader in Guild Wars had his dad playing with us, and the man was so slow, made PVP very difficult whenever he was involved.

Ya the days when games are only considered for kids is long gone. In the generations that have grown up with games, many gamers will play for life. Like even today's 20 and 30 y.o gamers will probably be gaming when they are seniors in a retirement home. It's only a lot of the baby boomers that still have it in there mind that gaming is kid thing.

I don't think that there's a specific age where it's not okay to keep playing video games.

Hell, my 70-year-old grandparents play Wii Sports Resort. There is no age limit.

    Like it's already been said...

Only time to walk away is when Life gets too busy or you become uninterested in games anymore.

Hey! if 90-year olds can wear diapers, why can't they play video games?!
