While many Wii owners are calling for more hardcore games, is it really worth it for the developers? Many 'hardcore' third party titles simply don't sell well, no matter how much money and advertising goes into them. Dualshockers.com takes a look at whether third-party devs should bother making games for the Wii at all.

With the Wii every publisher under the sun wants a piece of the 56 million plus user base but just can’t go about doing it efficiently. And what’s the one thing standing in their way? Nintendo.

I know your probably like “whaaaa?” but just hear me out. Trust me; no one wants their 3rd party publishers to sell more than Nintendo or any other console manufacturer for that matter. Remember kids, money is made off of the software, not the hardware, so it is imperative that all publishers sell as many games as possible. So how is Nintendo throwing a wrench into that? Easy. No one wants to play games on a Nintendo console if it doesn’t include one of the following: Mario, Samus, Link, Go Karts, or Mii’s (or any combination of the 5).

With that said, how many times do people read NPD results and wonder why titles like The Conduit, Madworld, and the more recent Dead Space: Extraction don’t sell as many copies as they should. Games like this simply do not work on the Wii, and it makes me ponder, how much longer will this last? How much longer can developers continue pouring in good ideas, time, and effort into a console that has the biggest reach yet manages to provide little incentive?

In a recent earnings press conference, Satoru Iwata has even gone on to say “We didn’t release strong software continually [for the Wii] and let the good mood cool down.” That right there shows you that Nintendo knows who’s the captain of software ship. They are the captain, the first mate, the cook, and the deck hands. They do not need 3rd party games and developers should stop making them. They should focus attention on the 360 and the PS3 where they have a better chance of having the fruits of their labor actually strive on the other platforms.

They work, oh yes they work, very well indeed. Just, no one buys them except for the people that hear about them. They don't have as many players, that's all. Most of the games he listed just didn't get much attention, but if the devs make more, Wii hardcore titles will be more recognized, not to mention better. It's only the start.

Lol. Let me see if I understand your point of view...

PS3/360 games just suck, no other explanation. But Wii games just need more support because they are ALL infallible and perfect. Am I close?

Um, yeah, that was kinda the point of the article. The criticism was never the quality of the third party support. It's just that the Wii fanbase aren't buying what should be major hits. Devs don't make games just to get a warm fuzzy feeling inside, they're trying to make money and if sales are bad then why should they and the publishers bother?

it's done been proven by every 'hardcore' game ever released on the wii that it's not worth it.

I agree with the article, to an extent. When I look at the Wii, I can't even think of any 3rd Party games. At all. The only one that I can honestly think of is Monster Hunter Tri, but that's only because I actually know about it. Everything else, is just Mario, Link, Metroid, and so on. It's the only thing that the Wii has, and let's face it, those games are actually fun, with friends and family. I can't stress enough how much fun Mario Kart Wii is with my little brothers. It's still a *bleep*ing annoying game cause I end up losing out of some serious bad luck half the time, but we still have fun. Then, it also reminds me of the time we played Mario Party, we had a blast. Same thing with Brawl.

In fact, the Wii can't be taken as a serious console because Nintendo, since revealing the Wii, has announced it and advertised it as a family console. Seriously, look at their commercials. They've been doing it since they launched it, and it's no surprise that I don't feel like playing any of the 3rd Party games on the Wii.

Finally, if they move to the PS3 or Xbox 360, I believe that they may end up having the same fate. I was going to bring up a good point for this, but now I forgot. Haha, so for now, I'll just leave it at this and call it a day.

I must say, your right about the commercials, most of the Wii commercials have familys playing games together or eldery people googling at the damn screen.

It would be funny however, if they next hardcore blood and gore fest on the Wii (If you could even call it that) was advertised with the family screaming in bloodlust every time they cut someones head off =|

Straight to the point! If you want hardcore games, go buy a damn 360 or PS3 because the ones on the Wii just ain't worth it.

Meh, a year ago I woulda been raging at articles like this but ever since I got my xbox...hell months BEFORE I got my xbox my wii has just been sittin there....collecting dust.

I try to get back into the games but most of it doesn't turn me on and the only game preventing me from selling it is Darkside Chronicles.

Of course once that comes out I'll rent, beat it then sell my wii. I just don't find it appealing and it seems a lot feels that way.

Stopped reading after "money is made off the software"

Nintendo is not Microsoft or Sony, and they do not rely on their software. They don't sell their consoles at a loss.

Why don't you change your user name to "anti-nintendo rhetoric" with the type of articles you are posting?

/facepalm. Maybe you should just read the article before commenting. You might actually understand what it's about then instead of making assumptions.

Why would I bother reading it when I know what it says already? Go ahead and hit yourself in the face with an open palm, dummy.

Oy, *bleep*wit, what you said actually has NOTHING to do with what the article is about.
