While Ocarina of Time is widely considered the greatest game of all time, Majora's Mask is largely considered one of the weakest games in the Zelda series and a disappointing pseudo-sequel to OoT. But with it's gorgeous art design, eerie plot, interesting three-day system and some of the best swimming controls in gaming history, was it really that bad a game? Zeldainformer.com doesn't think so.
Go to the source to find out why...

Majora's Mask is a game of great quality. There's a few that think otherwise, but with all great art, it often does cause quite a bit of polarity. Majora's Mask has the great distinction, or unfortunate fate, of being a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time, which many consider the greatest Zelda game of all time. While I won't argue Ocarina of Time's importance, I do wish to argue why Majora's Mask is better. Or more specificity, why Majora's Mask is the greatest Zelda game ever created.

What I would like to do, though, is go a bit more than skin-deep with this. There's many surface reasons why this game is fantastic, ranging from the difficulty to the side-quests, but there is just more to it; something else lurking just below the surface that peers out at the consumer giving them the feeling that they are playing something that is just of a higher quality than others. Even now, I can go back and play this game and appreciate every second of it. For your convenience, the article will be presented in list form.

As much as this is debated, I still have to but OoT at the top

What idiot considers this "one of the weakest games in the series"? Majora's Mask is actually one of the best games in the series. Although it's not better than Ocarina of Time, it's still a classic.

The number one complaint I hear/see from people hating Majora's Mask is the 3 day system. Seems to be a "love it or hate it" concept, even though managing available time really isn't that problematic and adds a layer of depth to the world of Termina that no other Zelda game has managed since.

Well for some the three day thing added suspense and tension. So it made a better atmosphere. However, at times it would really cause problems with the pacing. So it's an easier game to get frustrated with.

Majora's Mask was my least favourite. I found it to be too similar looking to OoT to be a sequel for it.

I definitely preferred MM over OoT. Once you get used to the 3 day system it's a really fun game.

It's *bleep*ing brilliant I think. The quests system is amazing. Transformations are so fun... The game has a feel I can't compare to any other...
It was a very risky title, too. I think Miyamoto said to hell with it since he knew everyone would buy it after OoT.

Not particular to Link's Awakening? That's probably tied with MM as #1 for me.

I really did enjoy MM much more than OoT.

I think it was the combination of the masks, time system (I'm a fan of that kind of thing for some reason), multitude of side-quests.

    MM ftw.

I really do enjoy OoT as well, but Majora's Mask is extra special for me.
I love anything with alternate universes...

It came out in 2000.....on of the last N64 games. In SSBM they had to squeeze in Great bay because SSBM was almost done with development. That's exactly why there were alot of tweaks at that stage.

Majora's Mask is one of my favorite Zelda games, if not my favorite. There's something about it that's so...charming.

Dude, I just LOVE the Song of Healing. It's a really soothing but eerie song. I love it so much that I actually made a CD playing the song over and over again in an endless loop for 80 minutes. Haha.

Thing is though, I agree with the article. I find that I enjoyed Majora's Mask much more than I did Ocarina of Time. Termina has far more mysteries than Hyrule does and I found it nice that we had something new thrown to the table than the regular Zelda format.

And the side-quests, man they were worth it. Not for the Final Mask, but because the side-quests made you feel like you actually accomplished something. That you were in fact, part of Termina's civilian's lives. It was a rewarding experience cause you got to find out more about the story behind the NPC's and Termina.

The Kafei and Anju sidequest was my favorite one of them all. It was heartwarming.

I think the Dancer Ghost was a good one too, and the Zora/water temple quest chain tugged my strings too. Maiko died, man, that's not cool. Badass guitar playing zora...
