It's good for replayability, that's what I like about the achievements/trophies. Granted, some people are obsessed with them and pick up games just for the achievements/trophies, but eh, that's their choice. They even set up "competitions" with other members to see who can get to a certain ranking over a period of time.
Not entirely good for you!
I don't class myself as a Gamerwhore, its more the RPG whore that makes me go for 100%'s... achievements are just recognisition and proof that you've pretty much mastered whatever game you've 1000'd.
God, I was gonna rant on how there entirely optional and don't affect gameplay and can make games funner by challenging you and give you a better sense of accomplishment but that would just be wasting my time now would it?
But, as I've noticed in myself, one could get carried away with it. I think I'm turning into a TrophyWhore too. Oops.
There are certain ways they can be bad though. They can ruin the game experience sometimes which is why I think they really should setup guidelines for coming up with them. Developers seem to just put anything they can pull out of their ass and reward gamerpoints for it not putting any consideration as to how it can negatively affect the experience.
