An editorial describing the evolution of competitive gaming from the arcades to your couch with a strong focus on how and why it's changed for the worse.

The question then is, why exactly are arcades dying? Why is this competitive spirit becoming such a minority. It seems counter intuitive. After all, multiplayer gaming is bigger now than ever before. Games get docked in reviews for not having a multiplayer component, as do entire consoles. If it is not competition we crave, then why the demand for MP?

This is obvious. Who honestly is going to go to an arcade to compete in a game competition when they can just go online and compete against a wider variety of players.

It's written quite well. I like the write ups at that site. The link to game design was also very good and rang true to me.

The worst part is that online play is so rigged. People inflate their online scores by either beating up n00bs in rigged teams or only playing people they know, etc. I wonder if scores ever really meant anything-- or if it's just our own egos that got fed.
