Let's face it. Most videogame movies suck. It's extremely hard to make the transition from videogame to the silver screen and even harder to portray the game's plot effectively within a two-hour motion picture. Here's eight games that are so good that turning them into movies would be suicide.

In the defense of Movies based off games there have been a trace few that were decent. Advent Children being the first that comes to mind.

The only other being Mortal Kombat. That was pretty good too.

    quote
Starcraft is undeniably, one of the best strategy games of the decade, featuring three utterly unique and fundamentally different races that perform in perfect balance with each other. While it certainly boasts an ambitious story, most of the game takes place over the vast, virtual fields of battle.net. With that in mind, a movie version would presumably have only the plot to work with, effectively ignoring the heart of what makes Starcraft, Starcraft. This leaves the movie boiled down to an Alien-esque horror-action title with a string of seemingly arbitrary species shifts.
What the *bleep*? Starcraft would make a great film. Just because the game is immensely popular online doesn't mean we have forgotten about the great story and deep characters. The story can easily be told through one race's point of view (probably Terran, as audiences prefer human protagonists), and not constantly shift through the 3 races, as this idiot is suggesting. It sounds like he didn't even bother playing through the campaign.

If done properly in CGI, Starcraft could easily be one of the best sci-fi action films of all time. Anyone who has played through the game and watched the cinematics would agree.

agreed. although i would say that it would make a great fan film, not a regular mainstream film. think FF7 Advent Children. only those of us familiar with FF7 knew what the hell was happening, casual ppl that never played the game, at least when ive been around, have always been like "WTF is going on in this movie?!?!"

and AC only ever came out on video, not in theaters, at least in the US. a Starcraft movie should be the same, more fan service than anything else. that way they wouldnt have to waste more than 5 minutes explaining things, they could just jump right in and have some cool story about the Xel'Naga or something, and have Raynor and Zeratul going around effing up some Zerg.

I believe they could explain it. Just do a voice-over at the beginning, telling the story of the Terran's arrival. The plot would make the most sense from the beginning of the Terran campaign, but just following the Terrans and the rise of Mengsk. Maybe even just following Raynor.

Following Jim Raynor would probably be the best thing to do, because that opens up doors to introduce the Protoss much easier. Mengsk also turns out to be a huge asshole, Raynor is a likable guy who can keep the interest of audiences.

I think Shinobi brought up an interesting point, but a CG Starcraft movie could still be hugely successful for mainstream audiences. The story isn't too complicated, especially for the sci-fi genre. Advent Children benefits from the fact that their fights are mainly just human vs human, small scale stuff. Starcraft's battles involve hundreds to thousands of soldiers and ships, that needs more than a straight-to-DVD budget.

true. so you could have Kerrigan as a ghost in the beginning, have a intro showing her being taken away by Zerg, then introduce Raynor, and later the Protoss and have Zeratul and Tassadar and Fenix, with a big battle at the end. maybe the whole thing could be about trying to rescue Kerrigan, only to reveal at the end that she's the queen now. then they could set up for a sequel film or it would just tie into the games themselves.

only thing is we would all know that from the get go, so that would be for the benefit of the average person. but then again i guess there would be no getting around that anyway.

I concur that about SotC. I hope the production gets scrapped.

I agree with the majority on the list (except Starcraft, as AznLiquid pointed it, it could be great).

However I think a movie based in the Fallout universe could work. It would depend on A LOT of things, but I can't help but think if they gave it the same kind of treatment that they're giving Prince of Persia with a unique story and all, that it could be pulled off. Perhaps maybe pre-Fallout, when the world was still in one piece and the events leading to it's complete devastation or something. Then again, that oddly reminds me of Terminator 3...

sandbox games are just generally not that great of source material to base a film off of.

I think most games can be made into great movies if they're actually done RIGHT and not just shoved together for obvious fan service---which ironically ends up doing the exact opposite for the most part!

Then you weren't paying attention. The movie is really easy to follow if you understood the game and understood everything about Jenova.

      Shinobi_razor Dec 27, 09
oh come on, its really easy to follow. the 3 bad dudes (Yadij and i forgot the other 2) which are like some kind of clones or something made from Sephy's DNA, are trying to get back Jenova's remains, which was inside that little box they finally got later. and Cloud and friends were trying to stop them for obvious reasons.

And then there was fighting and explosions and a lot of really unneeded explanations that sum up into "Those albino guys are doing bad things."

Also magic AIDs brought about from Seph being in the planet.

That movie was awful and should never be mentioned or related to the official Super Mario Bros. Series.

      Things it got WAY wrong:
      Daisy instead of Peach
      Bowser is Human
      Goombas are lizard men
      Koopas are lizard men
      Bob-Omb was 2 inches tall
Yoshi was a Velocirator with no shoes, saddle, horns, ect
      Luigi had no mustache
      Toad was a normal human
Mushrooms were based on REAL mushrooms

ah right I see, quite a list there . Well all I remember is luigi getting stuck in a pipe and bowser having a talking skateboard. Maybe I'm mixing it up with another film then man. I remember though when it was generally apprececiated just to see the whole world on the big screen, even if it was a bit crappy. With all the special effects and cgi and so on thesedays, the standards are ridiculously high before the budgets even drawn out, you know

HAHAHAHA man, I normally say the movie was not terrible, but not the best either. With that list of reminders, I now must laugh at it's ridiculousness LOL

yeh a lot of these sort of crappy moves you have fond memories of though innit, especially if you was too young to realise the crappiness when you first watched em. Like power rangers. Man what a piece of crap but the pink ranger still makes my mega zord rise ah yeh

Hey now! Nothing wrong with them Power Rangers!! Their cheesy awesomeness rules supreme among kid shows!
That is....the original, not the spin-offs! Lol

the original Power Rangers wasnt bad for the cheese factor, every spin off was crap though.
