This is a feature editorial by gaming website PlanetXbox360.com that answers the question, is the Xbox 360 really future-proof; with a detailed explanation of why the author thinks the way he does.

As the Xbox 360 gets further along into its lifespan as a gaming console, many in the gaming industry and community at large begin to question when exactly a replacement will be on the horizon. However, in the years since it was released, Microsoft has notably proven that the console is capable of evolving, being adapted to the needs and wants of gamers as well as developers. For instance, Project Natal will allow the Xbox 360 to compete in the realm of motion controlled titles. This, on top of already consistently strong content offered by Microsoft, continues to perpetuate gamers to purchase 360 titles as well as utilize the hell out of everything Xbox Live has to offer. But, as the 360 continues to be produced, it receives strong utilization as a gaming platform and media center, if for no other reason than people keep buying them in staggering numbers. Thus, it draws on the question of whether or not the system is actually future-proof until such time as Microsoft, in their infinite corporate wisdom, decides to replace the console with a significant technological jump.

Hmm...I don't know. Before Natal, the only changes I know of was removal of the HDDVD player addon when it failed as a format, all the different models at different prices, and them (MS) finally making a version that didn't RRoD on you.

If anything, I'd say that bar great sales and software, their system itself has had a relatively rocky journey.

360 has already been pushed, there's still some untapped power in it, but it's laughable to say its "Future Proof".

orly, my 360 can sit on my shelf till the year 2020 and it'll be all good. The future can't harm my 360! what it isn't though is waterproof, that's a bit tricky.

        Unless you get RRoD.

        It won't last to 2020.

I dunno dude. On one hand, the PS3 has been said to have a 10 year lifecycle, and we're only 3 years into that. So if another Xbox came out in the next few years, it might only do slightly better than the PS3 can.

On the other hand, a PS4 coming out first wouldn't be bad. It might set Sony ahead again, who knows.

    Only time will tell.

Nice to see we have Kave En back in his fanboy mode, him and Marxy should make a tag team for Sony.

If Microsoft were to release a new Xbox it would do SLIGHTY better? I'm sorry, please pull your head out of Sonys ass.

I'm going to be honest: The only way that Microsoft or Sony could topple Nintendo would be to resurrect Jesus and channel his force into every game released for the console.

Nothing is future-proof. Even top end gaming pc's are only top end for a max of 3-6 months. The 360 and the ps3 have been outdated a long time ago. However they will suffice and they still are very good pieces of hardware. There will always be new hardware and the 360 and ps3 obviously don't have new hardware it is using three or four years old. The wii's technology is about 8-10 years old so everything is already futured out.

Until you get into cloud computing, which I think may be where Microsoft is headed next.

I think it's right for consoles. PCs you can upgrade yourself anytime, but you can't really do that with a console. They could build better and better games graphically without everyone having to buy new consoles every few years.

My only concern is how you would have to always be online... but that wouldn't be a problem with me personally .

see it becomes a huge problem when youre having issues with your connection not working, then guess what, you dont get to play games!

Maybe Microsoft can setup wireless hotspots globally? lol.Like I said, I personally wouldn't have a problem with it, but it would obviously be a problem for many people.

They could theoretically do it with the Xbox 360... Graphically advanced games would be cloud computing-only, and the ones that could work with the 360s specs could be run locally. At least it would justify the price of Xbox Live in everyone's minds .

No I don't know where you got this "future proof" crap out of. Not even the PS3 is future proof.

If by future proof you mean sales then the 360 is good for at least 2, maybe 3 years max.

The PS3 has about 3 years before we might start seeing PS4 and even then It'll probably be like the PS2 where it will simply sell at a steady to low pace.

i think people are refering to hardware updates. but then again i didn't even read the article

Okay, let's be technical: anytime hardware is released to consumers it's already out of date. Argument settled.

Now let's work in the realm of the reality of this statement and what is intended... Can the 360 remain current and competitive in the next couple of years before it becomes tired? Yeah, I think It will be able to hold it's own, that being said, I do believe we'll see the PS3 overtake the 360 in the next couple of years noticeably from a AV fidelity standpoint.

To be honest, I feel like this whole thing of Microsoft saying their console is "future-proof" is akin to schoolyard kids where one kid says "My toy is awesome" and another kid suddenly feels the need to say their toy is equally awesome.

I feel like Microsoft is only saying this, because Sony claims PS3 is future proof. And yet they do not have as much "evidence" that their product will last as long as the PS3, but are just saying it because the other kid said it.
