Its kinda hard to make a list of pro's and con's when there aren't any con's...

      quote
      - Computer games should be treated differently from films given the specific, negative effects of interactivity on players, particularly their participation in violent and aggressive content.
      - It would be difficult for parents to enforce age restrictions for computer games.
      - Minors would be more likely to be exposed to computer games that are unsuitable for them.
      - An R18+ for computer games would exacerbate problems associated with access to high level material in Indigenous communities and by other non-English speaking people
      - There is no demonstrated need to change existing restrictions.
Cons from the article, and some of them make sense, Australian parents are too lazy to stop their kids playing R rated games. They should be forced to take classes about how games aren't just for kids.

@Big - I know that they listed con's, I just don't believe they are valid.

Saying that parents can't enforce restrictions on their children, just indicates how shit parenting is these days and how they don't have a *bleep*ing backbone like parents of yester year. I don't see how it could possibly be that hard.

CHILD: Can I play a R rated game mommy.
        PARENT: No
        CHILD: But I wanna *sobs*
PARENT: Go play Harry Potter or watch Spongebob Squarepants or something
CHILD: But I'm 25! MOM! *gets angry*

The cons are bullshit. I agree with Aussie Legend on this.

        My arguements to those cons:
Computer games should be treated differently? Why, so the games can be illegally downloaded? Besides, movies are so much worse these days and there isn't any real 100% agreement that games are negative on people anyway. Look at the the rest of the world, it seems fine having these games, only banning the odd one or two.

As for parents, if they can't look after their kids then they shouldn't be f*%@ing parents. Today's systems all have password type protection for that kind of stuff anyway. If parents are too stupid to take advantage of that, then don't give kids the consoles or get them the games. It isn't the government's job to cuddle parents so much that they no longer have to act like parents. Parents need to take responsibility, not the government.

Minors already see things much out of their league. Go to the movies, the chance an underage kid isn't allowed to see a particular movie is near zero. Any kid can easily surf the net for adult videos if they wanted. TV itself is quite bad, but it falls to the parents once again, as well as stores to not sell R18+ games to minors.

As for language problems, that's just silly. Maybe the non-English speaking people bit makes sense, sure, but bringing in Indigenous communites is to be honest, offensive to me. I am Aboriginal, but I'm Australian all the same. I went to school, as do so many other Indigenous people. All children and teens must get an education by law. This means they'd learn English all the same in primary school. That is just such a stupid point in my opinion.

And there is a need to change restrictions. A fair number of people are demanding change and their right to choose what they want to buy. It's their choice, and they're well within the law to buy those games anywhere else. Denying them that is denying their free choice really. Then again, Australia is becoming the new China.

I read the paper a little while back, just about all the cons are so easily refuted. I can't see a single good reason not to bring it in compared to the pros of having the rating in place.

I agree, but the cons would be from the point of view of the politicians who are blocking the rating. I hope us Aussie gamers get the outcome we deserve as the amount of games being banned/modified is getting silly.

I don't know how it exactly works but sometimes you can't reply to someones comment. There was no reply option. In fact the only option there was to click was report.Obviously I didn't want to report Hideo so I had no choice but to make it a brand new comment.

Well, instead you could always reply to Hideo's first comment which would put your new one under Hideo's second one. Just a helpful point = ).

We don't think we're better than everyone else, we know we're better than everyone else. Excuse us for knowing how to speak properly, we did afterall invent the language but that counts for nothing, right?

Yeah. We also created music and banished you guys to your prison island. Suck it convict.
