This is a feature editorial from gaming website PlanetXbox360.com - that looks at installations of your favorite games on both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

Since even before the launch of the PS3, Sony fans were touting the system’s incredible processing power as several orders of magnitude beyond that of the Xbox 360. So far we haven’t seen much proof of that in terms of graphical performance, but much of that is due to the general downturn in exclusive titles- developing two separate versions of a game would be far less cost-effective. Having recently picked up Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 to play with my fiancée on the PS3 (she finds the 360 controllers a bit too bulky) we popped in the disc, excited to once again run around as superheroes and pound various enemies into oblivion. Nothing was available until after it finished the lengthy installed.

The reason for the installs is because it's quicker to load directly from the hard drive rather than the disk. Games that have a lot of customization have a bit of a hard time dealing with load times.

It's not too big of a deal to me. I did PC gaming for a while, it's nothing in comparison.

Also, should have stuck with "American sales" instead of "Worldwide sales"

The fact that Blu-ray's initial read speed on the PS3 was sigificantly lower then the DVD read speed of XBOX has a big part to play in it too, it HAD to install just to match the loading times of a DVD game

Actually the read speed difference is not that large, so I do not understand why people keep bringing that up.

i'd say a maximum 2x read speed versus 12x maximum on DVD would be large enough to make a difference for earlier games

See, and this is exactly what I'm talking about. The Blu-Ray 2x read speed IS NOT the same as a 2x read speed on a DVD drive. People seriously need to do their research.

The 2x Blu-Ray is most similar to a 10 or 11x DVD drive (in terms of data read rate) and in fact runs higher than the 12x when reading large chunks of data, if I recall correctly.

At 2x BR can read as fast as 12x DVD's minimum read speed. At 3x, BR is comparable to DVD at 12x; through the first half of the
disc 3x Blu-ray is faster, it takes a 4x to fully beat a 12x drvie

So by proving my point, exactly where are you going with this?

The way Naught Dog does it is brilliant, you only load the game once when you play the Uncharted games. It's a good bit of time sure, but once that initial loading is done that's the last time you see a load screen unless you load up something else yourself.

Y'know, coming back from a day trip, I realize just how trivial stuff like this really is...

I always install games no matter what if I can anyway. That's one thing I hope they allow on all games on PS3 in the future. Play from HD. It's quieter and less wear and tear on the console.

I'm sorry but the article writer obviously did not looked closely at the games on the PS3.. you do NOT have to install Patches on any games, except those games that require you to be online to play the game. And the only game like that is Warhawk, and the upcoming MAG.

You can press the Circle button to cancel the patch install, AND you can just stay signed out from the PSN until you're past the load screen. There you go, two ways around the so called "Mandatory Patch".

Also, I must say, the recent games that I've gotten, I honestly can't remember any of them actually having any installs, and if they did they were all Optional (and I chose the option TO install them).

I've never been asked if I wanted to download an install; it just does it without asking.

When he says "This could be the reason the Xbox 360 is Dominating the PS3 in worldwide sales"

    WELL OF COURSE IT IS
THE 360 WAS RELEASED 1 YEAR EARLIER

And if you dont wanna download the update, Just sign out of PSN. I stay signed out of PSN when i play Brutal legend, Otherwise i'd have to download a massive 256MB update.

Actually the two are much closer than they'd lead you to believe in global sales.

Also, article fails when they said this regarding PS3:

Why do people really care if it's better load times? Usually it's like a few seconds quicker which is about 3 minutes saved for most games... Is 3 minutes that important. Sometimes long load times are good. I can go get a drink while it loads or something.
