Binge Gamer's newest writer Elissa Arms seems to be starting off things with a bang. An amusing piece regarding the much hyped (within the JRPG community) Final Fantasy XIII. I'd say take what she says in this article with a grain of salt, but for the most part, she means what she says.

I love Final Fantasy and it's no secret. I've got soundtracks, plushies, action figures and art collections, strategy guides, models, cosplay outfits, and a collection of bad fanfiction.

I dig the original games, but I'm a total next gen fan. VII through X are my absolute favorites. I used to think the series could only get better with time, but I'm sad to say, recently in the FF department Square has been one hell of a disappointment.

Nothing like a good bit of controversy to get your reputation up, eh

Controversy? Someone not liking where a video game series is going is controversial? And somehow this equates to getting good reputation? And a sarcastic smiley?

Edit: Your obvious comment is obvious. C'mon, bring something to the table, at least the writer actually did, this isn't like a Rapper Gamer Variety Hour piece. I've noticed even on the Final Fantasy forums, no one is up in arms and people are able to take the criticism of the game even if they like it.

My obvious comment is obvious, but took an edit to see it? Oooooookay.

Saying the game's bad is fine. Using the title 'eat it fanboys' is looking for attention. It doesn't exactly take a genius to figure it out, after all, I did.

I never doubted for one minute that it would suck.

But that's just me, and I've never liked JRPGs.

Judging by the track record, I'm getting the feeling that there never will be a good JRPG this generation. Save for maybe a couple, most JRPGs get recieved with either average or bad reviews.

I think Lost Odyssey is the only one that didn't seem to get 90% terrible reviews :\

Tales of Vesperia was in the 80% range I believe.

Valkyria Chronicles also did pretty well, I just wouldn't call it a JRPG.

The World Ends With You was positively recieved as well, although that's on a handheld.

      Uh...Demon's Souls anyone?

Pretty sure he's talking about JRPG as in the cliche sub-genre of Gackt look-alikes, large swords and ridiculous outfits, as opposed to just RPG's made by Japanese-devs.

I'd say Demon's Souls is more of a western RPG than a JRPG. Yeah, I know it was made in Japan, but the game is a western-style RPG done by Japanese dudes.

Doesn't matter if it "feels" more western. It's an RPG made in Japan. Hence making it a JRPG.

Actually the term JRPG is widely considered to be used only for those Final Fantasy style games. Many don't think of it as western RPGs and JRPGs, but just normal RPGs (Fable, Elder Scrolls, Demon's Souls, etc.) and JRPGs (FF, etc.). If a western dev made an RPG exactly like Final Fantasy most would call it a JRPG. In the same way games of the same kind from elsewhere in Asia are still thought of as JRPGs.

Definition (sadly) is decided by the majority, and that's how the majority use the term.

Granted her writing style is amusing, but this entire article is based on a game she hasn't played yet. So to even consider this as substansial is just ridiculous.

In any event, she didn't like Crisis Core or Dissidia, both of which I liked. Go on...play your DS. You'll find much more significant games on there.

Without reading her article I may as well say "Elissa Arms will probably suck as a writer".

I fully agree with your comment.

Hooray for 'tude in video game reviews! Thats exactly what they need. But wait! It's not a review! It's a rehash of other reviews slapped together with one person's interpretation of scans and fansubs and slathered with a delightful layer of douche bag secretions.

Pretty much like Zero Punctuation but without the actual art of being funny. Or originality. Scratch that, it's nothing like ZP. He's more dandy.

Exactly. Zero Punctuation is witty. He can rant, rave and basically bag everything about a game, but he does it with wit, so it comes across as funny.

The author of this article just comes across as a trolling douchebag.

It's safe to say it may or may not be a great game. But dont expect something epic. I mean Square Enix hasn't come up with anything really truly epic since FFX and the first Kingdom Hearts. Their latest games haven't honestly been that spectacular ever since.

People really overuse the word "suck." Pretty much you're saying the game will be terrible. I doubt that, it may not be the greatest thing ever but it'll be far from true shit like Jurassic the Hunted...etc.

Overhyped? Yeah, probably. Suck, no way in hell.
