GameDaily gives its own take at which RPG style is superior in the categories of the classic RPG, the MMORPG, the tactical RPG, the action RPG, most emotionally engaging (contains FFVII and Mass Effect spoilers), and the overall winner.

Though you might not agree with everything stated, it is an interesting read on a topic that continues to spur the interest of RPG fans.

Role-playing games have come a long way. It used to be that only a handful of developers created them, such as Nihon Falcom or Square Soft. Nowadays, however, a lot of companies release epic adventures, such as BioWare, Level 5 (the developers of the recently released White Knight Chronicles), Team Ico, Blizzard and so many others. The only question now is who makes the best ones, the West or the far East? Let the battle commence.

Umm, how about it depends on personal taste? There's no way to objectively say that one of these genres is the best.

This is an internet journalist so I think objectivism was thrown out of the window a long time ago.

I actually think RPG is too broad of a genre now. Though you could split it into western versus Japanese, there are some that blur the line.

this rpg was developed by a japanese company, and that rpg was developed by a western company. how the hell do you blur that line?

For instance, Demon's Souls is arguably a western RPG made by Japanese company. It's not about where it was made, it's about the game itself. If Square Enix decided to make a Final Fantasy game within the US, it wouldn't necessarily make it a western RPG.

No, Demon's Souls is a Japanese RPG with Western themes. If Ford made a car that looked like a Japanese car, it would still be an American car.

The term JRPG is used differently by many people. JRPG isn't just a term for Japanese RPG's anymore, it's a whole sub-genre these days.

Regardless of whether the semantics behind it are completely retarded that's just the way it is.
